I’m really happy. Wasn’t a “great” movie, but it was great fun, embodying everything that I adore about Pokémon. Reynolds is hilarious, and obviously steals the show anytime he’s on screen, but Smith is no slouch as his live-action opposite. Suffers a bit from the Goosebumps-Esque rush, but most of the time this thing moves at a nice even keel. Really impressive effects and action, perfectly capturing the spirit of the Pokémon world, it’s beauty, it’s freakiness, it’s danger, and it’s incredible bonding. This movie has such a big heart even at its snarkiest, and was just infectious.
It took 20 years for me to get my dream movie, and while it could have been slightly better, the wait was worth it, and I left satisfied.

So I had some fun grappling with my thoughts on this as thing I love vs genuinely being good. Turns out, it’s messier than I originally gave it much thought to. But on the whole, I still enjoyed this a lot.

I'll probably end up seeing this. I have to give them props for the trailers.

I certainly can not tell the difference between a Lucario and a Sneasel. I assume that Sneasel is just a weasel with a bad cold, and Lucario is a suave, charismatic Pokemon that everybody loves except his underlings.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this film. I was never into Pokemon at all, but the trailer plus A-List hooked me. Surprisingly I really enjoyed it. Ryme City was amazing. It felt like a real place and that Pokemon actually existed. Kudos to the special effects team. The story is a bit of a mess, but I actually didn't think it was too bad. It was easy to predict the twist, but I was glad that I didn't think that they dumbed it down for kids. I also have to praise Smith and Reynolds too. I have to admit that their last scene really made me tear up. Although it does seem weird now that Tim wouldn't have recognized his father's voice coming out of Pikachu's body, lol. I guess I can explain it away though with the theory that Tim and his father hadn't talked for a really long time. Or maybe it sounded different when he was Pikachu even though to the audience it was the same voice.

Or maybe it sounded different when he was Pikachu even though to the audience it was the same voice. That’s the theory I was subscribing to while it played out, but really, i may have been a little too distracted by the climax. Pikachu’s battle with Mewtwo was awesome, but the set-up perplexed me. Mewtwo being able to merge human and Pokémon souls was a stretch (and a power he’s never had until now), but I was willing to roll with it. But only being able to do it after exposure to the purple gas - which feels like some retroactive attempt at validating its use in the story - tipped me over. Why did such a simple concept have to be so convoluted. And for all the awesome potential a Ditto affords, they could have used that much earlier, and more creatively. Still, great fun.

It was both better and worse than I thought it would be.
I think in terms of the graphics and the spirit of it all, it was very solid. And I think the general story idea was very good, but the film really needed to go full Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and it just lacked bite. It felt rushed, the non-central performances were largely unconvincing (Ken Watanabe, what the fuck are you doing?), and the really promising set-pieces just didn't live up to what I felt they could've done. I think they needed to go much more hard-boiled and have Tim be something of a young Eddie Valiant-type, where we feel his disillusionment much more palpably than we wound up doing.
Overall, it was okay but I really do think they were on to something great but just didn't commit.
