ITS HAPPENING FINALLY
The Academy Twitter account just confirmed. Also, Foreign Film will be renamed Best International Feature Film (to be classier and more politically correct).

The first good decision that the Academy has made in a long ass time. (Though it's embarrassing that it wasn't this way to begin with...) It's about damn time.
And I like the name to change to "International," but really, BAFTA's "Best Film Not in the English Language" classification is the most correct name for it. Though I guess what the Academy does is technically "Best International Film Not in the English Language," or something. It's just not very catchy, I guess. Anyway, hopefully this starts to get people to not refer to non-American stuff as "foreign," because it drives me insane every damn time I hear it.

Apocalypto is a film not in English that was largely an American production and as a result wasn't eligible for the Oscar. I like "Best International Feature Film" because it implies a non-English language while also emphasizing the international nature of a production. I might be wrong about this, but isn't BAFTA (and Globes) eligibility for this award just concerned with language? |

International is a (I guess) nicer word than foreign and doesn’t feel as exclusive. But give it ten years and we’ll be having this conversation again. |
