I liked the 1st teaser trailer way more where Bradley Cooper didn't have any dialogue ugh. The new trailer didn't do much for me. Cooper is such a downgrade from Leo its not even funny. Cate Blanchett & Rooney Mara both look great though (they both have those classic movie star looks that can fit in any era) I'm keeping my expectations in check after seeing the underwhelming new trailer. Hope GDT proves me wrong though.

I'm totally off the Cooper train. I believe his smugness keeps getting in his way. He needs to challenge himself and take roles that are unexpectedly very different from his fall-back persona. I think that was waaaay back in Limitless maybe...? Was hard to sit through a good film like ASIB due to Cooper's same big-smug-smile acting. Very superficial. Hoping GDT is able to work around the smug and turn out a good movie regardless.
Yes, Leo would have been IT. I believe more people need to give Matthew Goode chances, though. He can do far more with these types of roles than Cooper. Not like Goode is already having too many chances but he's increasingly gravitating towards period TV. Wish he would try for more bigger roles in film; he's big enough to get them now I believe.

Just wanted to say the storyline description now on IMDB is so deliciosly weirdly descriptive and great and corny and noir-y - this may be from the novels book jacket (?) - but whoever wrote that ...........although I don't know how "young" they can make Cooper look - maybe we don't see his look in the trailer - I think this (finally) screens for some on Nov 29th-Dec 1 btw (?) An extraordinary description of a freak-show geek alcoholic and abject and the object of the voyeuristic crowd's gleeful disgust and derision going about his work at a county fair. Young Stan Carlisle is working as a carny, and he wonders how a man could fall so low. There's no way in hell, he vows, that anything like that will ever happen to him.

There’s a lot more, but they seem very mixed so far. Of course there’s the raves, but at least for me generally if something isn’t raved by almost everyone in early tweets, that it’s not a very good sign. ETA: People are guessing that it’s about Nightmare Alley. ETA: There’s a lot more positive reactions now, but two people from another film forum who got to see it certainly didn’t like it, so I still reception will be mixed in the end.

Sounds like a bp nod but no win for bp.

Good to see praise for the third act, which seems like the strongest part of the film (I'd prefer that over a movie that loses steam and fizzles out at the end). Interesting that one person found the second act weakest while another person compared the movie to Crimson Peak, which to me had a weak middle also but got stronger by the end.

"One, none or neither". Clayton at it again.
Proper reviews will clue us in more, but I could definitely see this missing BP altogether.

So more Crimson Peak than Shape of Water. I don't mind that. At the very least i shall bask in the glorious noir imagery.

Erik Anderson (AwardsWatch) doesn't think there are any exceptional performances in this, but Blanchett might get nodded on name recognition. Says he's glad he's keeping her at #9 in his Supporting Actress Predictions.
"Cooper is kind of miscast and Blanchett has played this before. It's like her Cinderella's Wicked Stepmother meets The Talented Mr Ripley's Meredith Logue. She is fine, just uninspired".
Anderson's take is what I suspected when I saw footage from this. Cooper did feel miscast and Blanchett keeps effectively doing the same thing over and over again for the last several years in different costumes, and keeps getting reflexively praised for it by lazy critics. She's coasting on esteem. Even when she's giving a good performance, like in Mrs America (which I still considered overrated), it just feels like she's run out of ideas.

According to Matt Neglia, it's not an above the line player outside of Blanchett in Supporting.

Starts at 78% RT ...........people talking about this ending might lend itself to a commercial upside we aren't seeing yet........endings matter........... I mean how many of the prestige contenders are going to deliver big numbers - HoG (I'm stretching calling it "prestige") and West Side Story and..........? www.rottentomatoes.com/m/nightmare_alley_2021

Nothing I’ve read really changes my predictions. Still think it will get a strong number of noms (BP, lots of techs, and possible acting) but only have a shot at winning some of the techs. I’d think Cooper still is in play for the last BA spot but it’s going to be a challenge. But I wouldn’t underestimate his ability to sneak in on his popularity and campaigning.

A C-review from The Playlist calling outright Cooper "miscast". Ouch.

Currently at 68 on MC with 7 reviews and 64% (Avg. Rating 6.60/10) on RT. Looks like it might finish in late 60s-mid 70s on MC and in the 70s on RT..maybe a little higher.

Not sure what’s going on with predictions here, but reviews are pretty mediocre and this film isn’t even going to be close to a BP nom. It’ll contend for techs and that’s about it.

Yeah, that's where I'm at also and he might have won for "The Shape of Water", but usually GDT is not some Academy favorite for them to nominate this.

This always looked like something that could easily miss. Never was confident in its chances going off the marketing outside of techs and supposedly it might even miss on some of those a la Crimson Peak. GDT's record is spotty. He's made two movies the Academy liked, just two. The viewer calling Cooper "flat" is kind of how I read the marketing. Not so much flat as your typical surly tightlipped noir antihero which is a hard sell. If Robert De Niro can miss for The Irishman, Cooper can easily miss for a GDT joint.

Up to 71 on MC and 82 on RT, perhaps we should all wait until more than like 15 reviews have been registered...
