One of my all-time favorites...
The Pope of Greenwich Village. Rumble Fish. Sin City. The Wrestler. Diner.

1. The Wrestler - heartbreaking 2. Barfly - GOAT-tier drunkenness 3. Angel Heart - he could have made a career out of doing this type of role over and over... 4. Diner - electric stuff 5. Ashby - maybe not really top 5... but deserves a mention for any pleb that says he hasn't done anything of note since Randy the Ram...
Sin City, Rumble Fish, and Year of the Dragon are next in line...

It's almost like early Scorsese... not quite as well crafted, but the acting is there.

One of the GOAT small-time hood books that went from Coppola to Cimino to the absolute hack Stuart Rosenberg. Not flat out bad or anything, but for me a piss poor adaptation of the book only worth watching for Rourke (definitely in his top 10), a batshit Eric Roberts, and the small dose of Geraldine Page.

Yeah, it really makes me wonder what would have happened with it had it a more capable director (I still think Rosenberg is good with actors and it shows here... Roberts, notwithstanding)... but I still love it.

Not one of my fave actors but the first 2 are special knockouts, the third is a one scene wonder in a film full of them (that I don't much like strangely) and 4 & 5 promised so much that the eventual career didn't deliver on imo.
1. The Wrestler 2. Rumble Fish
3. The Pledge 4. Diner 5. Body Heat

^ Good call on that deleted scene. Best moment of his career.

Sin City is great and The Wrestler is on a whole other level of heartbreaking cinematic realness. Haven't seen anything else worth mentioning but that's because I've seen literally none of his 80's work yet.

I haven't seen enough of his work to make an informed Top 5, but I would like to say that I think he and Kim Basinger are both really good in 9½ Weeks - underrated performances IMO.
