The trailer’s “media’s white male victim” angle is something I’m hoping is merely a cynical marketing appeal towards what most would characterize the core audience to a late period Eastwood film to be. Worst case scenario is that Eric Rudolph’s presence and any acknowledgment made towards his motives are relegated to a mere title card before the credits. Is this really gonna be a thing? This really happened and this guy was fucked over. He deserves a movie. Does literally every movie have to be controversial now? This has been soooo many movies about falsely accused people and it’s all the sudden a problem now because he’s white and it’s 2019? from the director of whitewashed jingoistic American Sniper and the needlessly politicized Sully, I have no problem being suspicious of Eastwood's motives. It's not beneath him to have an agenda (usually wrong-headed), and it's impossible not to associate what appears to be an unsubtle "Media = Bad" (which is so obvious and basic) slant coming off that trailer with the current outcry against media from conservative/republican circles. Yes Jewell was fucked over, but I don't think it's wrong to be skeptical about why Eastwood felt that this story needed to be told now in this climate and that he was the one to tell it.

At this point we aren’t talking about the story itself but who makes it and when and being bothered by assumptions you make about a movie nobody has seen. Also come on... Who is bothered by Sully of all movies?? You have to try to be bothered by a movie that harmless.

Well...it looks better than Sully and the 15:17 to Paris. Paul Walter Hauser brought an entertaining presence to I, Tonya and Black Klansman so I hope he’s good here.

Not bad... But you have to really try to find Hamm and Wilde in the poster.
Oh, and Hauser gets the "and" credit? I mean, isn't he the lead?

Also the poster is a bit of a photoshopping disaster. Jon Hamm looks like he got picked last for a kickball game.

It's too bad that Bates's chances for a SAG nominations are almost nonexistent because of whoever submitted her in the wrong category because this probably would have been her Oscar clip. I guess she can still get in, but she needs more than an NBR win and possible Critics Choice nomination.

Honestly, I don't know how people can take the NBR seriously when they are so heavily in the tank for certain actors/filmmakers/celebrities.The film has been seen and she had no buzz. Yes, that's a nice teary eyed clip. But was Bates really that amazing to the NBR? Or did they give it to her because they've been in Clint Eastwood's pocket for 20+ years, and he's wined and dined them better than anybody (except for Clooney). Would they have picked the same Bates performance with another director? Knowing how they operate, probably not. And I'm not saying she doesn't deserve a nod or consideration. I just hate that it's this corrupt group that's launched her into the conversation.

variety.com/2019/film/news/clint-eastwood-richard-jewell-kathy-scruggs-1203429660/So Kathy Scruggs offers sex for information in the film...which problematic because apparently she did no such thing in real life. What makes it even worse is that she's no longer alive to defend herself while Wilde spews some convoluted garbage about how it's anti-feminist to disapprove of a female journalist trading sex for tips Really gross optics, even for an Eastwood film.

Making the NTSB one-dimensional villains in Sully was annoying (it was untrue yes, but as a narrative device it was also just lazy and boring) but this sounds so much more gross and problematic. But Media = Evil amiright? Gotta hammer that theme. Eastwood is so out of touch.

Why don't we just stick to the reviews, which are not very enthusiastic up to now...
