Big budgets are not a bad thing for a director. Why is it orefered for him to work on a shoestring budget? As long as the script is good, he should keep on the path he's on.

When you start in Quebec, it is not like it is really a choice, it should not be seen necessarily as a preference to do small drama over big sci-fi they are just impossible to do. As a general rules, with all else being equivalent in term of final cut and liberty, the more money the better and I think he was always a big Sci-fi movie fan. I hope he's not greedy to take all big budgets projects offered to him in the future. Other way around for me, those big budget movie could use people like him imo, there is many young director today that were what Villeneuve was back then, that will make hundreds and thousands of small budget drama already.

This could be a phase, y'know? Arrival is not your typical sci-fi blockbuster, Dune is his dream project and Blade Runner is a beloved classic. Anyways, big budget movies could use someone with his talent.

He's proven to be quite adept at making thought provoking films no matter the genre, and Arrival is one of the best sci-fi films ever made. Sci-fi is by far my favorite genre and Villeneuve is by far one of my favorite new filmmakers so I really hope he continues to dabble in the genre for a long time to come.

Because he's interested in making sci-fi films, and also because he had success with Arrival. Plus the genre clearly interests him. At least that's what I think.
