After trying to make heads or tails of Pokémon Go, Herzog concluded, “You’d have to give me a cell phone, which I’m not going to use anyway, and I have no clue what’s going on there, but I don’t need to play the game.” I am quite certain that no film schools are going to tell you to make a film like Even Dwarfs Started Small, or have you hypnotize your entire cast (Heart of Glass) or drag that boat over that mountain and you know turn the local people against you because you are clearly a madman. When you hear Spike Lee talk about learning @ NYU film school you know he never once covers when you need to point a loaded revolver at your leading man and stuff like that. Genius level guy obviously - the only rival to Coppola's 70s big 4 imo - what he made in his great period were not just movies or any of the BS...........the "Spielberg cinema experience" blah blah blah - Herzog made seismic philosophical events that were informed by life and that has evaporated in films - he lived life he didn't need someone to tell him about movies about life or the structure and safety that film school provides - the way coming across a copy and reading Nausea at 17 on your own would be different than being TOLD to read Nausea, the way you can only now get it by only doing something else........anything else .........than going to a mere movie.

Never forget: this man stole a camera from his film school and went to make Aguirre, the Wrath of God . . . and far as I know, he never returned it.
I consider Herzog to be the most influential filmmaker of the '70s (even over Scorsese and Coppola, the latter of whom straight-up ripped off Aguirre to make Apocalypse Now . . . but as they say, good artists borrow but great ones steal), and he's not lost that luster over time. It says a lot that in the span of nearly fifty years, he's made only one film I'd call outright bad (sorry, Queen of the Desert), and is probably the greatest documentary director of all time. Guy sits in my holy trinity along with Lynch and PTA.
