I'm really not a fan of any of that year's nominees, beyond Whoopi and Meryl...
Glenn Close, Maxie Mia Farrow, The Purple Rose of Cairo Whoopi Goldberg, The Color Purple Miranda Richardson, Dance with a Stranger Meryl Streep, Out of Africa
I also like Cher in Mask and Vanessa Redgrave in Wetherby.
What does your lineup look like?

I actually liked this year's batch of nominees despite Page being the only one whose film was halfway decent, and by the by she's the only one who makes my own lineup. Patricia Charbonneau, Desert HeartsCher, MaskGeraldine Page, The Trip to BountifulKelly McGillis, WitnessVanessa Redgrave, WetherbyIncidentally the next three in line are Goldberg, Streep and Bancroft, although there are several more to see. I'm conflicted about McGillis because she's on the line between supporting and leading but I erred toward lead at the time and the movie didn't leave enough of an impression on me to want to see it again so there'll always probably be a cloud of doubt over that placement. Oh well. All I know is that she was wonderful.

Love her here too, but have you seen Maxie? It's such a sweet gem of a movie, and Close is fantastic in her dual role - it's unlike anything else she's ever done.

1. Norma Aleandro, The Official Story 2. Jane Birkin, Dust 3. Miranda Richardson, Dance with a Stranger 4. Swatilekha Sengupta, The Home and the World 5. Geraldine Page, The Trip to Bountiful
From what I remember, Goldberg was outstanding in The Color Purple but I'm leaving her out of my lineup until I can re-watch her film and judge her work properly. Page was also a deserving nominee/winner, Bancroft was solid and Streep was adequate. Still need to see Lange, Close and Redgrave among others.

Whoopi Goldberg, The Color Purple* Cher, Mask Geraldine Page, The Trip to Bountiful Miranda Richardson, Dance with a Stranger Norma Aleandro, The Official Story
Very strong year for this category. Farrow, Redgrave, Browne and Burstyn are also excellent. I need to rewatch Prizzi's Honor, and I've not seen Sweet Dreams.

Mia Farrow, the Purple Rose of Cairo Miranda Richardson, Dance with a Stranger Daphne Zuniga, The Sure Thing Glenn Close, Jagged Edge Vanessa Redgrave, Wetherby
Note - I haven't seen the Streeps, the Geraldine Page, etc.
Maxie looks like a lot of fun I'll add that to my watchlist too - "body swap" movies are a guilty pleasure. Close in Jagged Edge I really like, especially how she uses her eyes. Redgrave I just watched recently - she's good to great in all of her scenes, she has some terrific moments and I love all of her classroom scenes but the movie cuts around to others too much, and with the flashbacks, we just aren't with her enough and the character isn't written evenly enough to get a deeper, believable portrait.
