Sci-fi is one of the most popular and longest running genres in film history. Did you not know this?

You call that 'obsession'? What do you think, Jango Mango? I don't see any obsession at all. Even the way you listed them suggests the absence of obsession - just one movie per year. Am I correct in thinking that you specifically meant SPACE movies as opposed to just sci-fi movies?

I should have been more clear, so thanks for the reminder! *Rushes to change the topic title*

  2013 - Gravity 2014 -Interstellar 2015 - The Martian 2016 - Passengers, Arrival 2017 - Life They usually do 10-15 a year's for decade (depending how wide you consider sci-fi), you could easily list some for any year for example: 1995: Johnny Mnemonic, 12 monkeys, The net 1996: Independence Day, Mars Attacks 1997: Men in black, fifth element, Contact, Gattaca, Starship Troopers, 1998: Sphere, Deep Impact, Armageddon, 1999: Matrix, Wing Commander, And some Sci-fi franchise entry Jurassic Park, Star Trek, Alien I don't know how much more popular Sci-fi were lately, I imagine it is the case because young adult fiction were often science fiction, Divergent, Hungers games, Maze Runner and so on.

That happens all the time in Hollywood. If a movie is a big hit (like Gravity), then you'll see a bunch of similar movies soon after and until those movies stop making money.

They make money and score Oscar nominations. I mean, if 'Passengers' made it...

Saw the trailer for Life today and was wondering why the hell they're remaking Alien when we've already got a sequel to a prequel of it coming this year.

What do you mean by "Hollywood"? The fact that they are getting made, or that they are getting Oscar nominations?

I'm pretty sure Sci-Fi has been huge ever since a little movie called Star Wars came out 40 years ago. And it's not like it was small potatos before that.

That happens all the time in Hollywood. If a movie is a big hit (like Gravity), then you'll see a bunch of similar movies soon after and until those movies stop making money. It can be easy to overrate that factor thought (a bit like some people didi with oscar so white contreversy and the quantity of movie starring black people in 2016). For example Interstellar started filming a long time before Gravity theatrical release, there is no link between Gravity success in that movie. The Martian was bought before Gravity release with a really big name producer attached to it before Gravity too: variety.com/2013/film/news/fox-finds-martian-for-simon-kinberg-exclusive-1200007238/Lot of project never get made and I easily imagine gravity success speeded it up (or made people more confident), but the high concept was so good, extremelly commercial, the movie easy to shoot for a very large part (few and closed location) with one of the biggest producer at Fox attach, it will have probably happened without Gravity or even with Gravity failing, once the book turned into a best seller.

I'm sick of them. But I'm sick of any Hollywood trend that has been done to death just because Hollywood's trying to milk as much money as possible out of the audience that went to see one particular film.
