For me, the best movie genre is psychological thriller. It's a genre with a lot of duds to its name, but when they're good, they're fucking amazing.
My favourites are: Mulholland Dr. (also my #1 movie all-time) The Silence of the Lambs Psycho Zodiac Gone Girl Memento The Shining Misery

I don't know, maybe horror.
I have a lot of favorites that could be loosely defined as horror, but I'll just go off of what IMDb says.
Eraserhead (1977) Funny Games (1997) The Phantom Carriage (1921) Santa Sangre (1989) Hour of the Wolf (1968) Halloween (1978) Donnie Darko (2001) The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) The Shining (1980) Nosferatu (1922) Jacob's Ladder (1990) The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) Videodrome (1983) Under the Skin (2013) Scream (1996) Suspiria (1977)

I guess just standard dramas. Stuff like-
The Godfather Citizen Kane A Man For All Seasons A Few Good Men Network On the Waterfront
I'll give an honorable mention to old fashioned romantic dramas (since that's a more specific genre) like-
Gone With the Wind Roman Holiday Doctor Zhivago Casablanca The English Patient The Heiress For a more recent example, Brooklyn

I use to say thriller, but that horror was the best when done right. Fact is horror is just the best. It is the most entertaining and provides for the most depth.
Peeping Tom Psycho Hour of the Wolf Rosemary's Baby Martin Eraserhead The Shining Funny Games A Tale of Two Sisters Antichrist Moebius A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

(1952) takes the cake in this genre though. I remember I watched that once several years ago, I think when I was home sick from school, but I don't remember much of it. I'll definitely have to come back to it some time. Talking all-time my favorite would be Ikiru.
