Finally........I have to say, only slightly less fearful of what accent may come out of Al Pacino's mouth playing Hoffa is what sort of mannered affect (the great but all over the place) Penn seems to be using here but hopefully it works when you see the whole thing - in general that was something Penn was capable of delivering but that's not a slam dunk............ In a way this could make a good warm-up for Polanski's J'Accuse .........on the other hand films with such troubled histories rarely work out.......but I'll give it a watch.

The behind-the-scenes drama (not to mention the rather contentious reputations of its leads) makes it clear that it's not coming within a mile of any awards, but I actually think it's got a strong visual flair and both Gibson and Penn look solid (and what a roster of stalwart supporting actors they've clocked! Marsan! Ehle! Dillane! Coogan!). I'm gonna see it if no one else is.

So weird, three decades have passed and the Chernobyl radioactive accident is still causing this kind of thing...

Seeing it tonight. I saw that Variety review and I was worried it might go that way, but I'm still trying to stay optimistic. At least the ink on Mad Mel is good.

It doesn't look AT ALL like Oscar material, but your reasons for that are flimsy. I could easily see Gibson and Penn in Oscar contender projects in the future (though neither will win any time soon, noms is another story).

At least the ink on Mad Mel is good. Not a shock. Gibson is a more talented actor than Penn. He really got underrated for being charasmatic and "pretty" in his youth, and it's not always easy to overcome those biases. He maybe didn't challenge himself enough either.

I really loathe Sean Penn, but damn do I love to watch Mel Gibson. So conflicted.

I like them both so I'm giving this a chance despite the reviews.
