Oscar nominated Phillips ( Walk the Line, W.E., and sure to be nominated again for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) called Melissa McCarthy and Brian Tyree Henry's presentation of Best Costume Design "tasteless and insulting" to the art of film costume design. Here's the presentation: And here's her Facebook post, in full: LinkWhat do you guys think? It seems the Costume Design community is divided on the presentation... Hollywood Reporter

The latest storm in the teacup...or even thimble in this case.
It was hilarious. The Oscars have a history of lampooning plenty of categories, and none should be exempt from a bit of piss taking. When I think back to the 2019 Oscars, I will remember this presentation, and not a lot else.

I think she's taking a bit too much of an offense here. I haven't even seen the ceremony yet but as I understand it was just a little bit of visual comedy with the costumes, so what. I don't think it diminished any viewer's appreciation of costume design - most viewers probably don't even care and I bet that those who do did not feel offended or hurt by this little comedy bit.

Yeah, no. A whole lot of hullabaloo over nothing. A costume designer actually took the time to remix all five films into two costumes, and it's not like we haven't had other categories get snarked about before.

I would loved to have seen Colman's reaction to McCarthy's rabbit dress - I wish the director had cut to her at some point!

Johnny_Hellzapoppin - The rabbits were McCarthy's idea ( The Favourite was one of her favourites (heh) this year)! I just love her so much. And it kind of got drowned out in applause, but towards the end of her speech (right after she thanked Gaga), Colman thanked McCarthy, too.

It's affectionate fun, the way the Oscar presentations *should* be. If I had my costumes nominated and the presenters came out dressed like that, I'd be laughing my ass off.
Edit: So the main complaint (I read many posts in Phillips's thread) is that the writers "don't understand" costume design and costume designers constantly have to fight a misunderstanding of what their job is, and the presentation played into that misunderstanding. To which I say... not really? At worst, it's a gag about people misunderstanding what the job entails. At its best, it is simply flattery through parody, meant to be nothing more than a tribute.
I saw the question raised of "would acting or directing categories be presented this way?" To which I say... yeah. Hosts regularly make fun of the nominees and roast them a bit, and that's all part of the game. Nothing about it has ever been mean-spirited.

Typical. The actors have all the power and with that power they love to shit on all the other categories. We get it, the actors make up a good chunk of the academy (and the industry) but that doesn't give them the right to insult the others' profession.

Not even once. He played a gay man, you know!
