Was anyone? (This thread was supposed to be called ' Is de Tavira's nod the most surprising acting nomination of recent times?' but I couldn't fit the words in the subject field ). Maybe I wasn't following the race closely, but to me this nomination was even more surprising than that of Jackie Weaver's six years ago. Was anyone predicting her? I haven't yet seen Roma so I can't comment on her performance but even if I had I probably wouldn't have guessed she could be in the running for the fifth slot in supporting actress as I'm unaware she did any campaigning and of course she didn't receive any prior attention with any awards group. I just looked at the FYC gallery in Awards Daily and see that Netflix are campaigning for her, though.

No. I predicted Aparicio, but I didn't even think about de Tavira would have a chance to get a nod.

No, not at all. It was a huge surprise. I vaguely recall someone perhaps mentioned her as a totally wild NGNG kinda pick, but that might not even have been here.
From a personal perspective, I do love the whole shock nomination thing, but she's only my #16 in her category right now, so I'm not exactly pleased she's nominated.

No but in these changing times it makes perfect sense - in this very important year, this (historically) important film (there are people who literally think this 10 time nominee with no stars, in black and white, in a foreign language AND on a streaming service CAN'T win - riiiiiiiight) - its hard to form an encapsulation that covers what its like in terms of a race. If you see the film though, she make perfect film sense - she is a pivotal character in what we see, she is the flipside of the "lead" so in how she's drawn and delineated and she utters the most quoted line associated with this (great) film - and one that always will be. It's a nomination that restores your faith in the Academy and movies ..........um, you know, as much as that's possible

The funny thing is I was predicting back in October, but she kept missing major awards, I just forgot about her. Her nomination was a big surprise to me.

I was not predicting her, but I knew there was a strong possibility of her being nominated due to the overwhelming love for Roma and how it could eventually extend itself to her performance and Yalitza's. I posted in a thread that the Supporting Actress category is prone to some surprises, and if there were to be any this year, it would be either her or Linda Cardellini. I'm really happy for her, though. I thought she was great and she's currently my #3 of the year in Supporting.

After Roma intensive campaign I'd thought she had a chance when she was at Jimmy Kimmel Live and had screenings with Angeolyna and met Tom Hanks with Aparicio.
I reconsidered her when Feinberg had her as potential surprise.

No, but it made a lot of sense because Cuarón kept thanking her and Aparicio in every single speech. All the way back to november, right before the season started I thought she could be the performance critics get behind, but when I realise I was wrong, didn’t think much of her until the speeches and as mention above the Kimmel appearance. He said “you’re getting nominated” and somehow felt the same way when Ellen says to someone “you’re going to win the oscar...”

I knew that Netflix was campaigning for her but I never thought the Academy would go for an unknown actress in a foreign-language role in the supporting category. As I told you a few months ago, it only happened to Valentina Cortese and that performance had far more support from the critics. I just knew that Foy wouldn't get that fifth spot but I simply didn't know who to predict instead!
To me it's the single most surprising acting nomination since I have been posting on the Oscar Buzz board (2006).

I was not predicting this at all. I saw some people say that they wished she had a chance, but I pretty much dismissed them because she hadn't shown up anywhere.
Before seeing Roma, I did wonder if she could surprise and win since the race could be a fractured one if a different person wins SAG and BAFTA, but after seeing Roma I don't think she has quite enough to do it. Almost, but I think she needed a little bit more.

Not at all. In retrospect, perhaps we should've been considering her chances at a coattails nom, but considering she got in literally nowhere else beforehand, it was still a MAJOR surprise. And a good one, at that.

I didn't think she had a chance, but I put her down as my "miracle nomination" hope. I was utterly thrilled that she was recognized (I loved Aparicio, but honestly de Tavira gives a better performance in the film). Her surprise nod made the Hawke/Collette snubs and putrid Vice nominations go down way easier.

Not at all, I predict her, she was equally good as Aparicio. And beside that BPN also help BSactor and actress campaigne, more than lead.-
Sam Rockwell also won a spot, and nobody complains him.-

I was. I remember seeing her name as a non probable longshot in an obscure and unknown site many months ago. Despite not following the race at all (I started to have a look only recently) I said: "yeah, her name is exotic enough to pull a Laura Linney", since I predicted Linney back in 2007.
