The work between Chabrol and Huppert has to be one of the great collaborations across film ever - they were in marvelous sync together - Violette, Story of Women, La Ceremonie - the big 3 of their collaborations are 3 of her all time performances and smartly conceived and executed roles . Story Of Women and La Ceremonie are on the short list of best performances by a female ever (La Ceremonie is my all time favorite female performance actually).
That is a wonderful poster - she had already made a mark in film of course - Going Places (quite funny), The Lacemaker (quite devastating - her specialty) but Violette announced her as a great star - after that, well, the world was hers.

I think Haneke is the director that explore huppert to the deepest, She achieved her true greatness in Piano Teacher. Haneke is her true collaborator. Maybe - I'd rank The Piano Teacher probably third in her work behind the 2 Chabrol films but Haneke did give her a whole lot of room to move and create and he went where she took the material...........Chabrol on the the other hand more or less devised the roles with Huppert together like a collaborator would so it's a different thing from Haneke's style. I guess they've worked together about equally, Chabrol a little more right now anyway...... |
