Garbage. Terribly written, ridiculous garbage. Probably the most overpraised movie I've ever seen.

One of the most intense, nerve-wracking films I've ever seen. J.K. Simmons is incredible and that soundtrack is nothing short of phenomenal.

It's an immensely stupid film. Overcooked, cartoonish BS that takes itself far too seriously with a problematic ending that basically justifies abuse for the sake of "artistic greatness." Anyone who's an actual musician should hate it.

Whatever, I still adore the fucking hell out of this movie. From Simmons to Reiser, the sound, the editing, the script, and everything in between.
...and I absolutely loathe jazz music.

I'm not as high on it as I used to be, but I still find pretty damn entertaining with great acting and directing.

It’s still great and Teller deserves more recognition for his performance.

damn I didn't realize so many folks on here loathe this one . :confused:lol I really dug it (haven't seen it in quite some time though ) and was very pleased that JK Simmons took home the Oscar for his role in this . Teller was pretty good too and held his own against JK .
8/10

Anyone who's an actual musician should hate it. It's not easy to say that. Chazelle dared to show an extremely tough reality out there that is rarely presented so artistically on film: The inhuman instructor bent on beating his ward into a genius. We all know those people, parents, teachers and coaches, and military sergeants exist. And if the wards are formidable enough, they will pull through and reach that genius and more but at an extreme and who know maybe irreversible personal cost. That's why we feel revolted by Fletcher's smile at the end, because Andrew's face is telling an entirely different story. I found this really interesting read on all the tight ropes that Chazelle walks with this film: www.google.com/amp/s/www.theatlantic.com/amp/article/381636/

It's one thing to show this kind of behavior, it's another thing entirely to vindicate it. The article you posted actually supports this perspective.
