Yeah, Haynes should stick to the 1950s-set films.

Oh jolly, a 2-hour serving of Ugh. This is exactly what I thought too lol
It seemed weird from the get-go that Todd would direct this, but it's even weirder after the trailer. This is going to be a cheese and ham sandwich.

It looks like Ron Howard directed the movie and Haynes allowed them to use his name.

We can expect reactions for this today. To quote bruinjoe's immortal words, I "expect the reception to not be great."

So far, better than I expected, but still have to wait for the reviews.
Anne Thompson: Todd Haynes’ true story Dark Waters is a lot like Scott Z. Burns’ true story The Report: Mark Ruffalo and Adam Driver both play lonely obsessives tracking down the truth despite the forces arrayed against them.
Sasha Stone: Dark Waters is incredibly strong, deeply loving. Wow.
Chris James: Dark Waters got a standing ovation. Galvanizing and well done. Todd Haynes continues to make really interesting films, even if this feels less like his other films. Reminds me specifically of the plotting and intricacies of Erin Brockavich (though that is a bit untouchable)
Scott Menzel: Deeply upsetting & incredibly powerful. An inspiring true story about one man’s fight to do what is right despite the odds being stacked against him. An eye opening film about how big companies & our government don’t work for us but against us.

ETA: Okay the blue underline thing is finally gone now when I try to type normally. I can understand why Focus went with Harriet, but I feel like even as stacked is Best Actor is this year that just going by these early reviews and narrative that Mark Ruffalo could have been competitive with a bigger push. Actors really seem to love him right now, and this role feels more traditional than Joker, yet he's also worked in the industry longer and could be seen as more due than Driver. Maybe it would have just turned into a no one cares still, but I feel like at least now Ruffalo is so popular among actors that he can win with the right timing and role.

It seems it's better than it was expected to be but with 71 Metascore and no strong buzz, it's hardly a starter. That said, I'd not be surprised if Ruffalo makes into GG or SAG.
