First reactions are coming out. Love this guy Kind of hard to tell what’s going on with this one. So far I’ve seen like 4 joke reviews (including one who basically did the same bit as this one) and a couple of completely unknown people. Perri is the only person I’ve heard of that’s actually seen it.

signs are pointing to this having more of a mixed reaction, like 60-70 on RT if i had to guess I agree.

Review embargo has been delayed until July 18th. (It was supposed to be today).
Probably not a great sign.

It doesn't need to be a critical darling. So many people are ready to eat it up. Just a decent watch is all it needs to be.

I thought Perri from Perri's Picks liked everything. I feel that’s Zoe Rose Bryant

Yeah, I imagine it was generally well-received but I'm sure critics who feel positively about the film also feel safer from experiencing any backlash from the studio for getting their opinions out.

I do have to say, the fever pitch surrounding Barbie is so odd to me. Not because of the quality of talent in front of and behind the camera (even if I am not a fan of Greta Gerwig), but because it seems like the stan-dom is so deadly serious about it, the discourse building it up as this great cinematic monolith months in advance to the point that it absorbed into Oppenheimer to create a portmanteau that actually has its own Wikipedia entry . . . but you'd think it was a Zack Snyder movie with the way people are dissecting tweets and commenting on posters' pre-conceived agendas on whether they have their minds made up one way or the other. All for what is ostensibly a breezy movie based on a doll.

This guy is a member of the National Society of Film Critics, and he thinks it is one of the best films he's seen in a while.

couple of reviews saying some will hate it and the movie will be divisive, but they’re mostly pretty glowing so far. will be interesting to see what the RT and MC ends up being.

Armond White in a verrrrrrrrrrrry mean-spirited, even hateful review about Barbie today.......possible movie review of the year contender - not that it's right .......... but it is very entertaning to read .......and he usually has 1 or 2 of these per year : Gerwig is unperturbed by the fact that Mattel’s product evolution, by which Barbie dolls endlessly changed, kept up with commercial trends. The many variations are accounted for in a cynical overview (narrated by Helen Mirren — why not Ketanji Brown Jackson?) that dismisses those transformations, whether a pregnant Midge doll or Allan, a second-banana boy doll, as unhip. That’s because Barbie the movie derives from Nineties indie-movie hipsterism, whose ambassador, Gerwig, indulges self-satisfied smugness in the script co-written with her consort Noah Baumbach.www.nationalreview.com/2023/07/barbie-gets-weaponized/
