PromNightCarrie Of her "key" performances, I've seen Another Woman and The Notebook. I've also seen less integral films like The Skeleton Key, Paris, je t'aime, Hope Floats, etc... I'm really interested in her work, because so many great actors cite her as their all time favorite actress. So, where to start? Obviously her two Oscar nominated performances ( A Woman Under the Influence and Gloria) are musts, but are there others you'd definitely recommend?

"Opening Night" is a must. I'd also like to mention "Unhook the Stars" and "Playing by Heart". Both underrated stuff.

AWUTI is just my favorite performance from anyone in film history, so start from that. Opening Night is also something flung out of space, incredible piece of acting. Love Streams is one underseen but precious as well.

Everyone will name the same movies but I'd say it's the curveball titles where you learn more about any actor - yes, fine Opening Night, Love Streams are essential sure - but she was never less mannered or more lovely than in Minnie and Moskowitz (never mentioned on here) and you might like to see her play something other than an object of men's desire or her own madness - wonderfully controlled for example in her Night on Earth scene segment opposite Winona Ryder.
There is one Cassavetes movie where a character refers to her having a "fox face" - and it's the greatest description because she literally does and she could wring a lot out of it - a smile, a grimace, or pain - in a way it's a shame she didn't do more but she was a very major talent indeed.

A Woman Under The Influence is in a tie for #1 Best Female Performance of all-time for me. Start there.

Oh honey, Unhook the Stars! Love Streams! Another Woman! Even in The Skeleton Key, she's terrific!
Gene Rowlands is just one of those actresses that justifies the overuse of exclamation marks!

I can't tell you who is the best American actress I've ever seen but Gena Rowlands is top tier and arguably the most watchable of that top, the camera love her to a ridiculous degree, especially the Cassavetes camera, so watch the brillant works they did together ASAP, it's essential.
TV is also a place where she shone, if you can find her Emmy/GG winning performance as Betty Ford or her face to face with her favorite actress, Bette Davis in Strangers: The Story of a Mother and Daughter don't hesitate. Another Mother/Daugher TV film worth watching for her is Wild Iris where you might also end wanting to discover more of Laura Linney.

Lonely Are the Brave is great, too - one of my favorite Westerns.

Her work in A Woman Under the Influence is by far the best thing she's ever done!

For a fun one - for its ending anyway, seek out "Murder Case" with Cassavetes for the Alfred Hitchcock presents TV show......it's a fairly mundane mystery but they are fun to watch - they always are - and the ending pays off. Her "fox face" is at its um , foxiest here

I watched this clip yesterday like three times and today were the Daytime Emmy noms so when better to post? Hilarious, really classic type of soap scene.... "Idk how to be poor and I have NO INTENTION OF LEARNING!" Rowlands did about 40 eps of Peyton Place in 1967. I've been thinking recently how I've kinda ignored and underestimated soaps in the past, even using that "like a soap opera" phrasing as an easy negative. In honor of queen Gena, I take it back.

Gloria is considered lesser Cassavetes but its highkey my favorite and she kicks so much ass in it

The greatest American actress and part of the most talented American actress/director duo ever. A Woman Under the Influence is regarded as her crowning achievement, which is understandable, but I've maintained that she's even better in Opening Night. That movie just didn't get the same awards attention, has been underseen, and was difficult for pundits to understand at the time.
These aren't the only great things she's done, but I say put Love Streams together with AWUTI and Opening Night to make the Gena Rowlands presented by Cassavetes acting trilogy.

I went through a major phase last year during the pandemic.

I went through a Cassavetes phase one year where I was seeing everything Cassavetes (directing/acting) and in doing so discovered more about her. One film she's been in that I haven't seen is Lonely Are the Brave. Have you caught that yet and if so what did you think of it?

They had such chemistry in that episode, didn't they?
