I'm ambivalent towards metal. It's almost always too growly and ugly (Fall of Efrafa) or too cheesy (Rhapsody of Fire). That said, I enjoy the way it often plays with rhythm and melody. This 2020 album is much closer to the cheesy side, but I didn't find myself overdosing on it and needing an injection of depressing folk songs like when I tried to get through that Christopher Lee album from Rhapsody. On the other hand, the stuff I like most about metal (the originality and unpredictability) aren't showcased much here. Moviesinner, you're the metal guy; I assume you know this band? Yeah, I've heard some songs from them (not a full album though) and they are quite good. But I prefer my Power Metal on the cheesy side (I'm a big fantasy nerd BTW) and I think Rhapsody Of Fire are great (even though their last couple of albums weren't very good). I think a band that you'll really enjoy if you want to listen to this type of stuff is Elvenking. They are a combination of Power Metal and folk and their discography is pretty spectacular. They are probably one of my favourite bands right now.

If I'm gonna for a mixture, I'd look more on the folky side, like Garmarna - which isn't metal at all, but if I'm gonna go for "fantasy music" I'd rather have something their vein, like Gjallarhorn. I just keep hitting a brick wall of wanting to like metal, but I can never feel that it ever hits its full potential. Metal bands seem trapped by their genre. They need a Laura Nyro to come in and shake things up - say what you want about Nyro, she wasn't more of the same of everyone else, and metal so often sounds... samey, always driving and pushing, and for brief moments it works and the clouds open, the heavens shine down and I GET IT! Then I go through two more songs and I am so bored.

Then I go through two more songs and I am so bored. I understand you completely. I actually feel that way about some genres of music as well (primarily alternative rock, which I very rarely find an album that I can listen to all the way through without getting bored, even though there will be some song that I'll think "This is great!"). It's probably that I enjoy the fundamentals of metal so much, so that is probably why i'm such a fan of the genre and rarely find it boring (especially black metal and power metal to a lesser extent). If you want metal with much more variety you can always try Mr. Bungle or Maudlin Of The Well or other avant-garde metal bands. But, I'm generally not a big fan of them, mainly because their albums almost always sound like random stuff put together than something well thought out and coherent (which I much prefer), even though they certainly provide some interesting music.

RIP Chuck E Weiss 69y/o... Started out in his teens on tour drumming for Lightnin' Hopkins, later became very good buddies with Tom Waits - Waits cowrote the song above, and Weiss cowrote his song Spare Parts (“Dishin' out more than a good man can bear") for the great Nighthawks at the Diner album. He also befriended Depp while in L.A. - Depp helped produce some of his music and once called his 2001 album Old Souls & Wolf Tickets an all-time fav record.. I have that one on CD but I haven't played it in a while .

Okay, I'm intrigued. Mr. Bungle has the unpredictability of Laura Nyro, the electro-pop fun of Yellow Magic Orchestra, and most enjoyable of all, the satirical edge of Guernica or Jun Togawa (or for a lesser satirical musician in the same vein, Van Dyke Parks). I'm not entirely sure that I'm in love with this, but I'm always open to something this bonkers.
