struck a musical goldmine last night. Alice by Tom Waits, Chaleur humaine by Christine and the Queens, and a re-listen of The Crying Light by Antony and the Johnsons which moved me so much more this time than it did a few years ago. Fav tracks from each:
Also re-listened to Nick Cave's double album Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus. Must by my third or fourth attempt but most of these tracks still leave me cold, and the ones that stood out as highlights years ago ("Nature Boy", "Breathless") are still the ones I gravitate to, although I have a newfound love for "The Lyre of Orpheus" which provides one of the best examples of Cave as a musical storyteller.

Been listening to the Pretenders first album today - Stop Your Sobbing was their first single, a Kinks cover, and I think was done before Hynde started a relationship with Davies? Also funny 40 years on Hynde is still singing about sobbing on the new album (Crying in Public). As a side note, my family always relates their coolest stories in the most nonchalant way - apparently my grandmother once sang with The Five Satins - and my mom today told me she saw the Pretenders in the early 80s in Greenwich Village. Her review of the show: "I remember I banana clipped my hair into a mohawk that night."

"You will sign up for the newest industry!" One of the scariest song endings ever. Not merely a very great song but think about the way this song is written - there is not one trope or topical talking point that existed in 1984 in this song that belongs to ANYBODY except the creator of the song - everything in it comes from Mould's mind, his thinking and his POV - it is entirely original, creative, timely, radical political Art. One day we're going to look at the "Punk" music of the Trump era and we're going to be like - "where are the great Punk record of this turbulent political era?" Meanwhile 1984 gave us Zen Arcade AND Double Nickels On The Dime within a matter of a few days........
