Worse than trailer 1, the 8th GOAT actress in our poll (yeah right) is laying it on awfully thick still here but..........Emmy/Golden Globe/SAG wins coming! .......... and much poll wins on here to follow too no doubt....um.......

Nooo, I was looking forward to this, despite Bier being mostly a miss for me.

Reviews are in, and so far are mostly positive. Sounds like a crowd pleaser. Most have Kidman predictably as the MVP, though Hugh Grant is getting some good notices as well. Donald Sutherland as well.

God, I love a Hollywood production about rich people getting away with shit and no irony in it whatsoever. It's fantastic.

Waiting for MsMovieStar and her review since she's the one person who sees through the hype imo.........she was even more devastating than that loudmouth smart-ass pacinoyes in her review of the much loathed (by me anyway) Destroyer (73% RT, 6.2 IMDB, but only 1/2 of a brassiere cup rating from msmoviestar iirc and her dreaded and rare "Empty vodka bottle" rating as well )

From the New York bureau chief of Variety. Says Kidman delivers one of her best performances:

Donald Sutherland as well. You conveniently forgot this one! Finding the lone pan (so far) won't make Naomi Watt's career any better. If there were a lot of outright pans, I'm sure you'd have posted them. Reviews are generally positive. It is what it is. There are a lot more positive reviews I didn't post either. Like this B + review from Collider
collider.com/the-undoing-review-hbo-nicole-kidman-hugh-grant/
The ones I posted represented a general sample of how it's being recieved. The Hollywood Reporter review was an outlier, as no other outlet disliked it that much.

This dropped 25 points in ONE day - On RT from 84% to 59% currently - off 27 reviews atm........I'd expect it to rebound, I mean if a thing can fluctuate like that, it could fluctuate the other way too........but .........certainly this is dispiriting given the shows pedigree. Will have to see how it plays out when we get some more reviews in....... www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/the_undoing/s01

Well it's going up on Metacritic. Was on 61 yesterday, up to 63 today. www.metacritic.com/tv/the-undoingReviews are solid enough when it comes to television prospects. Not amazing, but not bad. It looks like it'll be about on par with The Morning Show (61% RT & 61 on Metacritic), which was Reese Witherspoon's producing/acting follow-up to Big Little Lies. That show has done very well for Apple and gone on to be a significant awards player (winning a Best Actress SAG award for Jennifer Aniston and a Best Supporting Actor Emmy for Billy Crudup), and is very much in the plus column in Witherspoon's career as a powerhouse television producer . Witherspoon has excellent instincts for producing things audiences will be hooked on, and it pays her huge dividends. Not everything can get critics super-excited like a Big Little Lies, but what will ultimately determine how much of a success this show is are the ratings and how audiences react to the show. It'll be interesting to see how the show plays. But it very much sounds like the kind of show (with descriptions of it being "pulpy" and reminiscent of a 90's erotic thriller) designed to work better with audiences than critics. I've said in the past... Kidman (and Witherspoon) has an intrinsic understanding of television as a medium that not all her peers trying to follow the same path have. Critics are great for "Your Consideration" ads, and you certainly want them to at least like you (or not outright hate you), but the ultimate goal in TV has to be to leave your audience satisfied and hooked.

Big rebound on Rotten Tomatoes in the last couple of hours. Now on 68% fresh, with 37 reviews.www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/the_undoing/s01Like I said, solid critical reception, without being spectacular. If audiences enjoy it, Kidman will have a bonafide hit on her hands.

Yep. If the first episode is any indication, Nicole Kidman has a hit on her hands. Gripping, stylish, opulent production and design values and excellent performances all round. And the first episode leaves you hooked to see what comes next.
Kidman carries the first episode with the effortless skill you'd expect from the finest actress of her generation, but is ably backed up by Hugh Grant, Noah Jupe and an intriguing performance from Matilda De Angelis. Strong script from David E Kelly and skillful direction from Susanne Bier. A strong start to this mystery thriller series about 1% ers in New York.

Now up to 73% on Rotten Tomatoes with 52 reviews. I was wrong....it's doing a fair bit better than The Morning Show with critics. This makes more sense, as the first episode was so strong in terms of quality to imagine the next few episodes aren't good enough to merit a +70 rating on RT.
I think this is definitely going to be an awards season player. And Nicole Kidman will be a threat for upcoming Best Actress awards, as Roger Friedman says below:

I didn't love ep1 but I'll continue watching for now. Horribly edited ep, and the gossiping ghost of Big Little Lies haunts this as it already feels like a replay. Kidman lame, not enough Hugh Grant (though there's an interesting, sidelong wit to him), Lily Rabe is pretty funny, Matilda de Angelis could thaw the Arctic.

This show is already getting endorsements from Oscar winners. It really was a great episode:
Also, the show premieres to very solid ratings for HBO, in line with some of it's recent hits (on par with Lovecraft Country's premiere, just slightly below Watchmen's premiere, and higher than The Outsider premiere):

Decent first episode, didn't blow me away or anything but it was intriguing enough that I want to keep watching.Nice chemistry between Kidman and Grant too.

First episode wasn't brilliant but it's just about compelling enough to keep me watching. Kidman and Grant are reliably great, and there are some very nice directorial flourishes from Bier. None of the characters are particularly interesting so far, and it can't help but feel like a lesser rehash of Big Little Lies, but I'm still in it for a fun, twisty melodrama.
