Drive is a movie about absolutely nothing. Yeah, it looks pretty. Yeah, the soundtrack is sick. Yeah, the opening is badass. But it's a fucking nothing movie. The Tree of Life is one of the most technically proficient movies of the decade, and it also channels the entirety of life into the fabric of its DNA. Drive is a fucking low-brow genre movie that masquerades as an art film because it has slow pacing and nice cinematography. This is the worst AMARA vote ever.

Ah man this was stellar. Lead Actress aside (surprised that Dunst lost). Great batch of winners. Drive and The Tree of Life are the two most influential films of this decade and I would've been happy with either; both are in my T-15 ever, but Drive is my #1 ever. Not only that but it kinda dominated where it should

Posting as I check them. Bayat, Hosseini and TTSS for Adapted and Ensemble are my main hopes!
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role: Perfect start!! The absolute right person won. Best Achievement in Cinematography: Obvious choice is obvious. I don't hate the win at all, but it would only have been my 3rd choice from the line-up.
Best Achievement in Sound Mixing: My Win
Best Achievement in Sound Editing: My Win
Best Achievement in Visual Effects: My Win
Damn, folks...I'm 4/5 at the moment.
Best Original Song: Well, that's the streak over, but still, I love this song and it was my second choice. Y'all are doing a fine job here so far.
Best Original Score: My Win
Best Achievement in Film Editing: My #3 so I can live with it.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role: First weak winner, and I do like him in the film, but nah.
Best Achievement in Costume Design: OK, so Anonymous was totally screwed over here, but The Artist is my #3, so again, I can live with this.
Best Achievement in Production Design: Not the right winner, but I guess it isn't a bad winner. It was a tough year for this category and all of these were deserving to different degrees.
Best Achievement in Makeup and Hair-Styling: My Win
Best Performance by an Ensemble Cast: Damn folks, you guys are spoiling me here. Another win matching my own. An all-time great cast.
Best Achievement in Stunt, Fight or Dance Choreography: No comment. One of only two or three nominated films I hadn't seen.
Best Achievement in Writing an Original Screenplay: Solid winner
Best Achievement in Writing an Adapted Screenplay: If this has been anything else, I'd have rioted.
Best Achievement in Directing: I can live with this as he is my #6 of the year, so was in my AMARA nominees.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Lead Role: Colman deserved this, but Swinton is marvelous and my #2, so I'm perfectly fine with this too.
Best Performance by a Actor in a Lead Role: Another one of my wins. You guys are too good to me...it isn't even my Birthday. I genuinely don't care what wins Best Picture at this stage.
Best Motion Picture of the Year: Like in Director, this is my #6 of the year, so I'm down with this win, though my Top three of TTSS, Melancholia and The Artist were all nominated, so it stings a little that none of them took the win.
So, by two or three country miles, this is the best set of AMARA winners we've had. I think 9 or 10 are my own personal winners, and a bunch more were in my nominees, so I'm cool with those wins too. I honestly don't dislike a single choice here. Pitt is a bit of a lame duck among all these damn fine choices, but I still like him in the film, and I don't like much about that film. I guess it's good that it won there and not in areas I outright dislike it in.
Roll on 2010.

I know you're joking, but if it helps, I definitely would have preferred either of those over Drive. Do you think It's possible that one buzzer voted multiple times using inactive buzzers's identity/name? I do double-check for duplicate ballots. Plus, based on how the points added up in the nomination phase, the winners were more or less expected.

Lot of terrific choices here, Swinton aside. Very pleased Melancholia came out empty-handed, and that Tree of Life only garnered wins for its most deserving aspects. The Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy wins were lovely, but it should have won for Oldman and Iglesias too.
All in all, much better than most of these have been these past AMARAs have been.

Okay, catching up on what I missed.
Perfect Screenplay winners!
I did not like Kevin, but Tilda was amazing.
Oldman was robbed.
I can dig that picture win.

All movies are about nothing if you look at it from this perspective. The "meaning" of a film (or any piece of art) arises from the viewer interfacing with it. There are movies I love that I'm sure plenty of people would get absolutely nothing out of, just like there's movies that other people love that leave me completely cold. Suggesting that a film lacking the thematic scope of The Tree of Life (which I find pretty majestic ((WHEN IT WORKS, TERRENCE)) but I'm sure plenty of people wouldn't give a flying fuck about) is inherently worse doesn't make any sense from so many different angles that I don't even know where to begin. I think you're spot on with your Lynch takes most of the time my man, but this post
