The actress who refused to be a one-hit wonder, taking her splashy, Oscar-winning debut and turning it into a full, storied career. Please, share your thoughts! What are your favorite performances? Any genres, actors, or auteurs you'd like to see her work in/with?

She gave the greatest female performance ever put to screen in Misery, so that would be enough of an accomplishment to make her one of the automatic greats, but the woman has a dizzying amount of range and versatility aside from that. She can play it for laughs with some of the best comic timing I've ever seen, she's not afraid to get off her pedestal to "slum it" and winds up making those projects worth it. She can play extraordinarily weighty dramas with equal skill and aplomb, and has been known to run the gamut of emotions in a single film so beautifully.
The one thing I think Bates has that a lot of her peers don't is this: there's not a single ounce of bullshit to her. Every performance she's ever given, even in the things that aren't good, resonates with honesty. She believes every word she says, every situation she's in, no matter how wacko they might be.
She's my win for Annie Wilkes and for another King creation: Dolores Claiborne. Watching those two films back-to-back, it's incredible seeing one actress play two wildly different characters and yet give them her own unique signature that it can never be duplicated. I give her a slew of other nominations throughout the years, and her television work is also equally laudable. She made an episode of Two and a Half Men watchable, for God's sakes.

Absolutely legendary in Misery and Dolores Claiborne...
Great presence in tons of other stuff too... watching Six Feet Under over the summer really made me realize how much I love her... she was only in 10 or so episodes and was so effortlessly delightful (while being a badass at the same time) and created such a great character that felt missed whenever she wasn't around. She also directed the hell out of a few episodes...

I like her a lot but more in comedic roles ( Squirrel Lady ) . I saw the other day her latest interview with Colbert and she’s a blast, stay by the end and see how she tells the fact that’s she’s playing a woman who was born in 1888 on On the Basis of Sex 😂 I think I watch that part 5 times...

At her very best, she has done some near peerless stuff, and for that she's a bit of a legend. I've seen some stinky stuff from her on American Horror Story, but that show brings out the worst in everyone on occasion.
