By far my favorite... the guy is just bonkos. Glad I checked to see if anyone had done the gag before I bothered looking for a picture.

Oh honey, this book is huge! I almost broke my arm carrying this as it's over 400 pages and 12 inches tall. It's a pretty good one to throw at somebody and kill them during one of those film noir moments.
Everything you wanted to know about Lana Turner; How she got her big break bouncing her rather ample fifteen year old boobs for a thirty-six year old movie director (this was pre #MeToo when you didn't have to learn lines); the MGM bleached makeover that made her so gorgeous that Argentina's First Lady Eva Peron promptly stole her look; How she married band leader Artie Shaw at eighteen (he was ten years older) and how outside of the bedroom he thought she was a total bimbo; How Lana went on to have 7 husbands, including Tarzan, and a long list of lovers (400 pages worth and that's only the featured famous ones); her movies and how she came close to an Oscar for her courtroom appearance in the Stompanato killing (her mobster boyfriend); her dysfunctional dykey daughter; her love of coffee, chainsmoking cigarettes, clothes and cocks and cocktails (she was an accomplished alcoholic); How she had 698 pairs of shoes (before Imelda Marcos - clearly she was much copied by First Ladies) Ultimately, more Beautiful than Bad, she ended her days as a born again Christian and decided that she didn't like sex afterall (now, I never said she was a fast learner). For fans of the Golden Age of Hollywood with all its glitter, glamour, gorgeousness and garbage...
Her famous gold digger feminist inspirational quote, 'A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is one who can find such a man'.
But seriously, Lana wasn't so much of a banana and left some iconic performances: The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Bad and the Beautiful and Douglas Sirk's soapy Imitation of Life.

I've a personalised copy of The Dream of Jiuzhai by Dong Ya-fan (I know him), protege of Li Yuan. It's a collection of photographed landscapes from across China. If I can find and afford it, here's what supplants it:

Honestly, I think cookbooks make the best table books. I could look at different recipes all day.

Oh honey, is the Gena Rowlands book in French?!
All the good things seem to be French at the moment... Jean Dujardin, Assaad Bouab, Louis Garrel, Hugo Becker, Pierre Niney, Gaspard Ulliel... Even Emmanuel Macron is hotter than nursing home Joe.
Life is so unfair!

MsMovieStar - Oh honey, yes - she is so beloved by the French (the Japanese are fascinated, too). It's an interview with Rowlands conducted by Stig Björkman of Cahiers du Cinéma, and illustrated with photographs of her life and work. It was first published in 2001.

Oh honey, do you read French? I can speak it, Oui, un ménage à trois s'il vous plaît. Mais, vous ne savez pas qui je suis?I can't read it... actually I don't even understand it. Just smile and look beautiful. Talking of beautiful, here are some lovely pictures of Gena from the 50s.

MsMovieStar - Oh honey, yes, although not incredibly well. When I'm in France, 99% of people just answer me in English when I ask them something in French. Vogue Paris coming every month has helped!

Oh honey, but they love it if you try to speak it! You have to, otherwise those Parisians think she's just another vulgar American with no class! Have you seen Le Divorce (2003) with Naomi & Kate Hudson? You get judged if you're not wearing your scarf in the right way.

A photo album of John and Gena published in Japan in '93... GAH, must have! Hoping my family will be feeling quite generous this year.
