It's shocking to me. He always seemed very ambitious and over the years had made a lot of great films but recently, he's turning into Nic Cage with all these VOD action films. Sure, we still had "Love & Mercy" and "ChiRaq" but still it's very disappointing to see what's going on with his career.

At least he's slowed down. For a few years it seemed like he didn't give a crap and was just accepting any script that came his way. He only has two movies lined-up over the next year at this current point.

Apparently he's an asshole in real life, so maybe that's taken a toll on Hollywood's goodwill towards him. I always thought him and Robert Downey Jr. were very similar in how they both started off as offbeat leading men from the 80s--not officially IN the Brat Pack but often milling around its periphery--and then transitioned into more sophisticated roles throughout the 90s/early 00's. RDJ obviously had that long hiatus due to his personal issues but came back strong with a healthy balance of independent and mainstream projects (that balance has clearly shifted heavily towards the latter in recent times, though). Cusack hasn't had the same kind of luck...the last decade for him has been marked by a lot of B-level blockbuster films and some obscure projects that never really saw the light of day. He's an excellent actor when he wants to be even if he's easily pigeonholed to a certain type. I haven't seen Love and Mercy but the reviews of his work there seemed to be generally positive. Seems like the talent is still there.

Two words: T V
Couple years ago Cusack co-created (along with two execs from Justified, sup Viced) an untitled show about wall street (for CBS, but whatever) and it had a good cast, interesting premise, Niels Arden Oplev directed the pilot. But it didn't get a series pickup. That was 2014, when Cusack's career should've had a turnaround...... Maps to the Stars was ok, but at least it was a weird and daring project. Love & Mercy was one of his strongest perfs in years.
Currently his career is looking icky - so he pretty much needs to pick better material/filmmakers, or look back at the potential of TV. Hit up Netflix, please.

2012, maybe, did a number on his career.

I'm sure he could get good supporting roles or land a good TV starring role. Seems he is holding onto lead film roles that just aren't there.

I ask this question every five years. He's one of those actors that is liked, but he's in a lot of bad films.

I mean he's getting up there in age and he's not a traditionally handsome man so there's not that many roles out there for him.

I was going to post on this subject myself. Don't think his looks have anything to do with it and it's not the lack of talent. Maybe he's got a shitty reputation? Treating people badly on set? Who knows. I think it's strange he hasn't gone to TV yet.

I remember reading that he made Minnie Driver cry on the movie set of Grosse Pointe Blank (1997).

He turned into a poor man's Nic Cage. Just like Nic, he occassionally gets acclaimed (Love & Mercy) and/or auteur stuff (ChiRaq, Maps to the Stars) but the rest are embarrassing. I don't know why because he always seemed like a guy who cared about his career and made careful choices and he was very passionate when he was making stuff like "Being John Malkovich", "High Fidelity" and "Grace is Gone". You could see how much he was enjoying making them, Maybe he just doesn't care anymore. I love the guy, he has been in a lot of my favorite stuff. So I'm all for his comeback - no matter on movies or TV.

Oh yeah? And so are George Clooney, Denzel Washington and Brad Pitt. But these are also Academy Award Winners. Clooney an Pitt also succesful producers. Right now only Washington is a Box Office huge star.-

He's done interesting work in the last ten or so years. Grace is Gone and Love & Mercy are both good dramatic perfs (mostly well received yet the bastards couldn't toss him a single critics award or indie award or anything for either). Solid success and good time in a horror and comedy with 1408 and Hot Tub Time Machine. Also kind of a willingness to do some bleaker work too in Maps to the Stars and The Paperboy. But at this point right now his career is looking baddd. And I've said it before, he needs a role on a good TV series, idk why he isn't developing something for himself in the realm of High Fidelity or, since he seems to be passionate about it, something political.
His most revealing project actually is No Somos Animales, which he wrote and produced. It filmed in Argentina in 2011 but was only released last year Jan '17 on Netflix. It's a meta-docudrama of sorts, a lot of notional dialogue on celebrity, philosophy, politics. But there's a telling monologue from Cusack that may have been improvised and right from his heart (he speaks to himself in the scene) -

I always thought he was kind of bland, despite liking some of his movies like High Fidelity, so I never really noticed he was gone in the first place.

He was never really a heavyweight, though? I'm not at all surprised he hasn't had a lasting career.
