The Kinks are in effect, the anti-Beatles.
The Beatles had something for everyone, everyone sang, had songs in their particular style etc.
The Kinks had Ray Davies - who was Costello AND Westerberg in one - and if you saw the world like he did, a place for sarcastic but deeply emotive beautiful losers like he was and you felt like.......he was a guiding light.

Hmmmmmmm.......the Smiths to me are sort of how I feel about Nirvana - 1 great album (Queen is Dead) and interesting to talk about otherwise. They're too British I guess to be my thing but they're crucial definitely. Great singles band too.
That was a band that released their first album to an audience who had been waiting for that forever : poetic, sexually ambiguous, socially and politically charged. Until the Smiths emerged no one knew that audience was even there.

The Smiths are maybe my favorite choice so far, or second behind Springsteen. They have some clunkers for sure, but their best stuff is amazing.

Bowie's very cool. Wouldn't put him in my own Top 10 but I can see it. Cygnet Committee is so underrated.

Not the biggest Bowie fan - I'll argue that Bolan beat him at being himself on Electric Warrior and The Slider and that with the exception of Heroes no Bowie song ever really touched me.
On the other hand, he sure didn't suck and he proved that you could fake it - he was a dilettante - and still make great music at times - he removed all authenticity in Rock .........and that in a way opened a lot of room too.

Radiohead is one of the most interesting rock groups to me in terms of how they approach harmony and timbre. They're experts at creating "sound worlds" and their music often has a hypnotic effect that it's easy to get lost in. Even if they're not your cup of tea, it's hard not to respect them for what they do.

Queen had a late surge.
Also, my internet connection seems to be down and doing this on my phone will be a pain in the ass. Will resume with the Top 2 asap. Meanwhile you can predict the order of the Top 2 since I’m sure you can all guess who those 2 will be.
