Hilarious how Sleater-Kinney can make this. Does not seem like this board's thing at all. There's way not enough voters. Maybe you should've sent in a ballot then.

Love Muddy (the Chuck Berry of the Blues) - the greatest personality in the Blues and The Only Ones are a fave band of mine that mastered the neat trick of singing about narcotic despair as a parallel to romantic despair.
On a different note Metallica while not a fave of mine were probably the band next to Motorhead the blurred those lines between metal and punk - they're tremendously important just for that - they created their whole audience out of kids who saw the world like they did.

Metallica may have had a sharp decline, but those first few albums of theirs are legendary... and their most recent one I would say is a pretty solid return to form.
The fact that the artistry of Nine Inch Nails rests primarily on one guy's shoulders is pretty astonishing. It's also incredible how varied his output is in terms of style... if you compare the Pretty Hate Machine era to something like With Teeth, which has freakin gospel-like stuff on it combined with EDM influences, you realize how much the talent of Trent Reznor really cannot be overstated.

Jack White is one of the few genuine post-Cobain Rock Stars - and you can say that without feeling embarrassed or cringing - he's one of the few guys who has a history of what he's playing and goes back with it in the best way - he's idiosyncratic but fun too, it never feels like he's schooling you, he wants you to enjoy it - his music at its best shows a love of music.

This list is absolutely wild.
Glad it didn't have many voters... it's much more inspired this way.

Easy pick for me ..........think how many different Neil Young's there are - acoustic Neil, punk Godfather Neil, wasted Neil, experimental Neil, Neil in a band, Neil solo etc
You can buy Decade and be blown away by the breadth and depth and then you think - he did a whole lot of great stuff after Decade.

Only 3 people voted for Neil Young though? That makes me sad...

Is This Desire? = one of the great rock song cycles that isn't just a collection of songs, but works as a unified, expressive whole

Elton John is one of the few artists I can think of who first took the piano and transformed it into a true instrument of rock n roll.

The Talking Heads really invented what we think of when we think of an original Rock band - they could take almost any style or sound incorporate into their sound without losing who they were. For American bands they don't have many precedents or successors.......

Hell yes @ Talking Heads.
Glad those Led Zeppelin hacks didn't place any higher than that.

When you take one of the greatest rock guitarists ever, one of the greatest drummers, one of the great electric bassists, and one of the greatest front men of all time.... you get Zeppelin.
