Alright, bitches, here we go.
I ran a poll on this on MA on IMDb and there were interesting results. Now, given the different usership we have on MAR, I'm curious to run it again and see what happens.
RULES
1. List the 25 film scores that you believe are the best of all time. 2. The #25 on your list will get 1 point, the #24 will get 2, and so on. Please number them; if the list is not numbered, I will count them as 1 through 25.
3. Send your list by pm. 4. You can change your list if you'd like. In that case, you can send me another pm. 5. I believe sagas and trilogies should NOT be listed under just one title (for example: if you're voting for The Godfather, I will consider it a vote for the first movie, not for the trilogy). But I understand not everyone might agree with me on this, so this is up for debate.
Voting opens now and it closes on OCTOBER 24th at 11.59 PDT.
Please use this thread for FYCs and discussions. If you have any questions, please ask!

YES. Last year, I started a list of my favorite single scores of each year, but I haven't made a personal all-time list yet, so this will be fun. For me, it's going to be difficult not having John Williams completely dominate.
FYC:
The Social Network King Kong (1933) The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) Lawrence of Arabia Planet of the Apes (1968) Somewhere in Time (1980) Back to the Future The Mask of Zorro

‘75 was a great fucking year for scores. Just saying Jack Nitzsche's ending theme to One Flew always gives me chills and I find tremendously moving - it's sad, weird, haunting, and heroic all at once.

Some that haven't been mentioned yet:
Picnic at Hanging Rock - Bruce Smeaton
Princess Mononoke - Joe Hisaishi
Spirited Away - Joe Hisaishi
The Fountain - Clint Mansell
Marketa Lazarová - Zdenek Liska
I'm not sure how many people here have seen the last movie, but I definitely recommend it and the score is amazing.

FYC: Everything Joe Hisaishi ever did.
Also, fun fact: my ballot was entirely devoid of John Williams. I love the man and his greatness cannot be disputed or denied, but only two of his scores would make my Top 25 overall (Jurassic Park and The Empire Strikes Back), and I wanted to give some passion love to a couple of other films. But I'm sure he'll be fine.

YES! A poll for my favorite technical category! Now... some FYCs. These should be in everyone's list: Badalamenti is one of my favorite composers, and this might be his best score, and since we cannot vote for Twin Peaks... The other score of his that deserves to be in this list is Mulholland Drive. Another one of my favorite composers. Morricone is a genius, and this score is just pure perfection. It makes me cry everytime I hear it, with or without the film. The Mission and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly are others that deserve high placements. In one of the best years ever for the category, the Academy chose to award Elliot Goldenthal for his 'Frida' score. And they did the right thing. This is so much more than just a soundtrack. This is what mexican culture is all about, this is what Mexico is all about, and no other score could capture and match so perfectly the spirit of Frida Kahlo. While hearing it, I felt transported to a whole new world, full of sounds, rythms, colors and symbols of one of the richest cultures in the world. No other score could serve better the story of such a fascinating woman/artist as Kahlo. The Hours and Far from Heaven would complete the trio of perfect scores made in 2002. Horror is often forgotten when it comes to these lists, which is unfair, because it's a genre that relies heavily on scores. Psycho is probably the best score ever made for a horror film, but there are others that are just as good: Halloween, Suspiria, Jaws, etc... (not horror, but Bernard Herrman's score for Taxi Driver also deserves to be in everyone's list). and the underdog... (but also one of my top 3 favorite composers) Ryuichi Sakamoto is one of the best composers / musicians of all time. His score for The Last Emperor is iconic and earned him a well-deserved Academy Award, but there are others that are just as good. The score he did for Wuthering Heights (1992) is sublime and it perfectly captures the atmosphere of love, isolation and despair that permeates the novel. Another one of his scores, a personal favorite of mine, is the one of Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. If you've never heard it, listen to it ( link) It will stay with you forever. Other FYCs: - American Beauty (Thomas Newman) - Le Fabuleux Destin D'Amélie Poulain (Yann Tiersen) - Requiem for a Dream (Clint Mansell) - Her (Arcade Fire) - Forrest Gump (Alan Silvestri) - E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (John Williams) - Out of Africa (John Barry)

Already only a week and change left ... gonna start working on my official ballot soon. In the meantime, as promised, a second batch of FYCs (some of these are gonna be repetitions of what's already been mentioned, but they deserve the extra notices): INTERSTELLAR -- Hans Zimmer (Okay I know this movie is super divisive, but this masterful score is without a doubt one of the best of the decade, so please take it into consideration!!) MAD MAX: FURY ROAD -- Junkie XL ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST -- Ennio Morricone
DAYS OF HEAVEN -- Ennio Morricone THE THIN RED LINE -- Hans Zimmer DRIVE -- Cliff Martinez (though this may be futile considering it didn't even get nominated for a 2011 AMARA ) FARGO -- Carter Burwell THE FOUNTAIN -- Clint Mansell And not that it needs to be mentioned (probably), but, for what it's worth, the track that is, as far as I'm concerned, the best piece of film score ever composed...
