DEFINITELY LEAD:Berenice Bejo, The ArtistCharlotte Gainsbourg, MelancholiaDEFINITELY SUPPORTING:Viola Davis, The HelpJessica Chastain, Take Shelter I think with Chastain, category placement might actually depend on how one reads the film. If you see it more as a psychological film about a man struggling with mental illness, then she's definitely supporting. But if you see it more metaphorically about marriage and family, then she seem more of a lead.

I can kinda see what you're saying, but Chastain's perspective is entirely tied to her viewpoint of her husband's struggles, and I can't reconcile her being lead in that respect because she is still seen as having to be supportive, quite literally, to Shannon's character. She is the primary sounding board for his conflicts, but she takes very little actual agency in the story.

This interesting actually. I would consider him lead, where I don't have room to nominate him, but if the board went supporting, I would happily nominate him there for the AMARAs, while keeping him in lead in my actual mine-ups.

I had a stupid thought: to nominate or not nominate animals?
Not that I think animal acting really has the same power as human acting, but I bring it up because Uggie was such a big part of The Artist’s charm. Now whether you can chalk that up to the dog being aware, or just a really great trainer (and maybe they could get a side mention), he still stole the show. Back on IMDb, this was a polarizing talking point, so I thought I’d pose it again.
Or perhaps, it not for acting, it would be better suited for the choreography category?

Dogs don't have the capacity to reason or understand what they are doing in the service of art. That's why the ridiculous comparison between children and animals has always annoyed me. I say we do what Cannes does and recognize the best animal performance of a given year as a special mention, because Uggie rules. Uggie's obviously a shoo-in for 2011, but I'm beginning the campaign for the CGI fox in Antichrist for 2009 right here. CHAOS REIGNS.

In cases like Carnage, I always go the supporting route, but I would have no issue with those who don't.

A man after my own heart. He drove me mad, and I don't just mean the character, the performance too. The film itself was pretty decent and Cullen was very good, but damn if Chris New didn't suck.

as far as Contagion goes, I'd make the case that Damon is lead and everyone else is supporting. As for Carnage, I had the distinct impression that at least Foster and Winslet were lead. Reilly I never thought about because his performance didn't leave an impression on me, but I have Waltz in supporting.

Charlotte Gainsbourg, Melancholia SUPPORTINGWhy, though? Not only does she have more screentime than Dunst, she also has the entire second half of the film devoted to her perspective. It's a film reliant on both Claire and Justine's experiences and how they parallel. Feel free to jump in, other people who have her supporting.

I'm hazy on the film and didn't care much for it, but for whatever reason I always had Gainsbourg in supporting. Don't know why, that was just my impression at the time. Dunst just felt like the central character to me, but admittedly I might have been a bit checked out by the second half. I remember a lot more about the first half.
