#29 (Tie) : Krzysztof Kieslowski Points: 118 No. of Ballots: 8 Highest Ranking: 8th on four ballots “If I have a goal, then it is to escape from this literalism. I'll never achieve it; in the same way that I'll never manage to describe what really dwells within my character, although I keep on trying.” #29 (Tie) : Carl Theodor Dreyer Points: 118 No. of Ballots: 7 Highest Ranking: 3rd on one ballot “Nothing in the world can be compared to the human face. It is a land one can never tire of exploring. There is no greater experience in a studio than to witness the expression of a sensitive face under the mysterious power of inspiration. To see it animated from inside, and turning into poetry. ” #28: Werner Herzog Points: 120 No. of Ballots: 9 Highest Ranking: 2nd on one ballot “Every gray hair on my head I call Kinski.” #27: David Fincher Points: 129 No. of Ballots: 11 Highest Ranking: 4th on one ballot “You're supposed to have an idea of what it is you're trying to do, right? Aren't you being overpaid to have that? My job is to know what the fuck I want. ” #26: Brian De Palma Points: 132 No. of Ballots: 8 Highest Ranking: 3rd on one ballot “I like stylization. I try to get away with as much as possible until people start laughing at it.” That's a great group there...and Brian De Palma.

Hmmmmmm.......again talented names but Herzog, Kieslowski and De Palma are personal faves and the first 2 especially are more than just guys who made movies I liked, they are rather 2 of the most talented, unique and daring artists period. Like there is no one like them in film history.
It's gonna be sad that they are behind mere craftsmen but good names on the list no doubt.......

Mann's too hit-and-miss for me to justify him being this high, but Collateral and Thief are goddamn works of art.

Mann is too low. But #25 is about where he has always been ranked in IMDB history. Goddamn old Hollywood fanboys taking his reputation down though - only types of film buffs I ever heard bad word from him on.

De Palma and Mann are criminally low! Fuck...
Literally just finished watching Mission to Mars. Made me cry tbh.

Happy with Tarantino's placement. He doesn't need to be in the top 20.

I'd bump Tarantino down a bit, but I can't complain too much. Guy is a champion re-mixer of style and panache from cinema of old.

Tarantino only made it back into the Top 25 right at the death, having spent a lot of time in the 26th - 28th region.

That's a great group there...and Brian De Palma. Yikes... must be rough having such bad taste. Appreciate the concern. Somehow, I get by.

Malick would be much higher, I bet, if his recent output didn't exist.

Tree of Life is in my top 10 of all time, but I didn't include Malick on my list because that's the only film of his that I have any real passion for (maybe Days of Heaven too). Still, his placement here isn't unexpected...

He's a weird one, gifted but overrated director, but would have made a helluva painter. I like Badlands very much ........and some of his others too but he didn't come close to my top 25.
