Let's talk a bit about tomorrow's Best Picture winner. The question is pretty self-explanatory.
As much as I love 'Another Day of Sun' (and I do adore it), but favorite musical sequence in the movie has got to be 'Somewhere in the Crowd', specifically its first half with the girls having fun in their house. Not only is it a complete and utter artistic triumph in my eyes (the camera effortlessly gliding through the rooms, the art direction really popping, etc), it's also where for me the movie catches that balance between old-fashioned homage and contemporary sensibility in the most wonderful way. It feels like the most old-fashioned bit of the movie, and yet it's also bursting with a modern feeling of life and joy. And the music is obviously wonderful. I'm a tad ashamed to admit it but fuck it - I always get a lump in my throat when one of the girls sings the words 'somewhere in the crowd' for the first time with that fan. Not because it's sad or anything, but because of how goddamn perfect it is. The second half of the number is also great with that big party literally and figuratively culminating with fireworks.
My least favorite one is probably the planetarium dance. Don't get me wrong, I still like it quite a bit (there's not a bad number in the film), but I wasn't THAT impressed with the floating part. I love the way it starts with the handkerchief floating away (utterly perfect use of music there), but the two of them starting to fly didn't really get me as much as I wanted. And there's also this curious decision to show them dancing in silhouette from quite some distance from the camera, which kind of fits in my theory that perhaps Chazelle was deliberately trying to stay away from showing their romance too closely. And I know that this will sound weird, but it just felt like the most 'obvious' number to me. Not quite 'phony' or 'insincere' but just...'obvious'.
What about you, folks?
