As any pacinoyes follower knows I often advocate for Power-Pop as the "best" music genre but it's the best music genre in a way that rarely ever works - usually it lacks the Power and it doesn't lend itself to that many great albums either. Basically it exists to promise you so much and give you so little - as a genre it breaks YOUR heart.
No power pop band breaks your heart more than the story of The Records - who made a classic single (Starry Eyes) were then (of course) written off after that and they screwed themselves by chasing dollar signs when The Knack got big. They were better than The Knack........and better looking too .........and like all good Power Pop bands they ruined themselves........but this is their greatest song NOT their hit (also great).
One of Power Pop's greatest songs too - and is in itself a song about heartbreak, real and imaginary and nobody knows it......unless you're a fan of Power-Pop that is. Now that's heartbreak baby......
Death Letter Blues - This song, a blues staple is one of the most devastating in American songwriting because it mixes the songs point into the form itself: what's more heartbreaking "the letter" or "the reality"?
In one almost unbearable lyric "I didn't know I loved her, until they began to let her down" (ie bury her).......this version is the original by Son House but a version by the great White Stripes helped people learn it too.
I've posted this song before in the covers thread - originally by pop-punk obscurities The Catalogs which was even meaner at first lyrically (!) and improved by the mighty The Queers who turned it into a QuintessentialQueersQlassic.
"I don't like you! You are a genuinely terrible person!"......pupdurcs Oct 29, 2020
"God I MISS people like pacinoyes" - pupdurcs/scrudpup - Feb 26, 2017 on Gold Derby
One of the great recent heartbreak albums (2012) - it's actually a theme of the whole record.......the decades best new record and a stinging video too where he sings it like a girl at one point in exaggerated "bitchy" mannerisms to go with "cut off the bottom of my feet, make me walk on salt/take me down to the police, charge me with assault"
It's almost uncomfortable to listen to this song and read the lyrics too....
