Proclaimed by Martin Scorsese as "Hollywood's most underrated star," the tragic beauty romanced by princes and future presidents seems to hold a very unique place in cinema history. Has there been another actress able to, at once, be both exotic and enigmatic and the sweet all-American girl next door? Few things are as chilling as her character in Leave Her to Heaven watching, cruelly, as her victim drowns before her. Please, share your thoughts!

She's terrific and also one of the most beautiful actress ever. I was really taken by her stunning "bad turn" as a crazy obsessive female in Leave Her to Heaven, and have also seen her in Laura, The Razor's Edge, Where the Sidewalk Ends, and Dragonwyck, in each she gives a dazzling performance. Very underappreciated "golden age" actress.

Resurrecting this ancient thread because I came across something really interesting yesterday - François Ozon says one of the reasons he cast Paula Beer in Frantz was because of her resemblance to Tierney... InterviewTagging fans of Frantz/Tierney/Beer/Ozon - I'm thinking there's probably a huge overlap between the four, though! LaraQ MsMovieStar Allenism bob-coppola ibbi Zeb31Beer gives me Isabelle Adjani/Romy Schneider vibes, but I could certainly see adding Gene Tierney into the mix! She's so, so good in this film. Have you guys seen Frantz? pacinoyes Mattsby

Paula Beer gives me such Old Hollywood vibes! Her turn in Transit reminds me of a more modern Ingrid Bergman in Casablanca, actually.

I have seen it (and liked it) - it actually reminds me of something Fassbinder would have made in the mid-70s and starred Hanna Schygulla. I'm not sure Beer evokes Schygulla as much as Ozon evokes Fassbinder though .........though Phoenix with Nina Hoss evokes Fassbinder and Schygulla more than Frantz does.

Anyway, I don't really see any similarities... I guess maybe how mature they seemed so young (still have a hard time believing Paula Beer is that age) but looks wise they seem worlds away to me.

Haven't seen Franz but based on other photos I don't she favors Tierney really at all except for maybe the coloring. I see vague echoes of Adjani.
PS: Do yourself a solid and compare Tierney's facial structure with Catherine Zeta-Jones'. The similarities are uncanny, even if they're very different "types" overall.

Oh honey, I loved Franz! It was a really well made movie. I don't see the Tierney resemblance, but anyone who hasn't seen Leave Her To Heaven, needs to see it. Such a classic.
