I thought there was already a thread for this, guess not....

Robert Pattinson & Johnny Depp have been confirmed for small roles. As well as Joe Alwyn (who has four big films coming out this Fall). Filming begins in October. Some cool bits: Pattinson was recently seen in London at a showing of Othello (where Rylance is playing Iago). Depp reportedly was such a fan of the novel he reached out to the director for a role in this. And Rylance hasn't starred in a feature film (non-TV) since '01 ! Anybody read the book...?

This has been my most anticipated film since it was announced two years ago.
Coetzee's novel is stupefyingly good (and very short, so anyone who wants to read it could knock it out in a weekend), and Rylance fits the lead role like a glove. I don't really like the idea of Depp's involvement (as far as I'd heard, he had been courted for a part but had dropped out, but perhaps not?), but Rylance and Pattinson make up for that. And it's Ciro fucking Guerra, who directed the best film of 2015 that wasn't called Mad Max: Fury Road. Seriously, y'all are sleeping on Embrace of the Serpent.

The director was interviewed last week and asked if Depp & Patz were confirmed and he said yes. Depp's role is likely small....idk what there'd be to worry about....

It's just general leeriness at Depp's general lackadaisical nature and lack of inspiration. But if he's aggressively been pursuing this part, maybe that's a good sign.

We’ve seen what we can worry about in a small role.

Definitely a weird time to be a Depp fan - I plead the fifth. I was hoping for some kinda critical comeback with his next roles, two "normal" characters in City of Lies and Richard Says Goodbye. But the former got canned bc I think legal trouble, and the latter I thought would play fall fests but I guess Sundance is in order. I mean they could still work out and I hope they do. Btwn those, Depp taking a role in a project like this, and the mention of wanting to direct a feature again (in the recent, rather sad Rolling Stone profile) - I'm hoping things turn around for him.

The book is one of those things where it's kind of hard to imagine it as a movie. It's very literary, not cinematic at all like so many modern novels. Which makes for a better book but is harder to turn into a movie.

New interview with Rylance. At the end, he talks Waiting for the Barbarians and confirms Depp's involvement as Colonel Joll, the film's antagonist.

Depp last night at Zurich Film Festival : It's right there on the tip of his tongue: and I'm also working with Rylance on Pacino's King Lear. JUST SAY IT

This pretty much suggests that when Depp reached out to the filmmakers, he didn't just want a small role, he wanted to help on the business side too, which is very very cool and rare for an A list actor to jump onto a foreign produced project that they didn't develop. The other guy in his development deal Iervolino I only know bc he co-produced Merchant of Venice and The Humbling. He did another recent film with Michael Radford so maybe he's involved in King Lear as well which would make Depp's casting in that more likely I'd imagine.

I didn’t recognize Depp until I zoomed in to get a better look (to be fair, I’m on my phone).
God, he really does look like dogshit these days.

They also got Harry Melling? Guy crushed it in the latest Coen Brothers joint, so I'm pleased about seeing him here. Very curious about who will do the music. Philip Glass did an opera based on the novel in 2006, so he'd seem like an easy choice, but my heart wants Mica Levi.
