LOVE that Burton made it and didn't think he would - tremendously important actor, a great talent......a lot of people first think of him as a guy who wasted his talent but he delivered a lot on it too.
He was the rare British actor that was positively virile - and yet his greatest roles or at least his greatest - couldn't have been more different from that.

But at least he made it. I always thought he was too esoteric for this board, and most people haven't seen his movies. And that picture.... yikes.

Love Olivier though, and should've been placed much higher, shame so many of his great performances remain unseen.

Ahhh I love George C Scott, I wanted to put him higher on my list but I haven't seen enough. But what I've seen, he has an underrated range. Hanging Tree his debut he goes full-out theatrical in his perf sorta at odds with the piece but works okay with the character, but then he'll ace the icy academic roles like Anatomy of a Murder and Petulia, then hit you with Dr Strangelove which is an exemplary cartoon-comic perf, and mix the two for his best stuff like The Hospital.....

Dying to see if Denzel will rank higher than Pacino I think Joaquin Phoenix will be the actor ranked too high this time (it was Brad Pitt during the similar IMDB poll), he got nothing but love these days. I suspect you will be right about Phoenix.

Late observations...
- Gosling over the true Canadian GOAT, Donald Sutherland? Lmao... and Chris Plummer isn’t even gonna make it (unless I missed him).
- Robin Williams and Tom Hanks are way too damn high.
- Super happy the legend George C. Scott got into the top 20...
- Mostly a great list so far... very happy to see Cagney and the two guys from Jean de Florette that aren’t Yves Montand.

I love Chaplin (The Circus is my #5 movie of all time) but I had to halfway reconsider his acting talent after rewatching Monsieur Verdoux....... a movie I remembered loving and thinking he was phenomenal in..... but on rewatch I found his performance kind of infuriating (the everlasting grin, the unruffled, faux-politeness) and pat to a fault.
Still, I mean.... a legendary comedic force, just wanted to add some sour in btwn my fawning posts !

I know it's because of how much people like Kurosawa, but for me I just think of him as that guy that dances around and has jittery antics everytime something slightly hysterical happens. Very dated acting, and doesn't compare to the classically trained British actors of his period. He did improve though. Became a dramatic actor starting from Red Beard if anyone has seen that.

Nonsense, he gave impressive subtle performances throughout his career including The Quiet Duel, and High and Low, which both predate Red Beard.
