Cyndi Lauper had 2 big hits with 2 of the oddest covers - Girls Just Want Have Fun (Robert Hazard) which is basically a song about girls wanting to fnck Rock Stars - it's not the song people think of as a feminist anthem until a girl sang it .....but even better originally was The Brains 1978 classic "Money Changes Everything" - which was one of the 70s angriest new wave songs which had nothing fun, funny or sexy about it at all.....and like the Arrows "I Love Rock and Roll" nobody knows it's a cover anyway......
If you're a fan of any cult artist one of the things you notice is they are never the "best" at anything as a musician - Paul Westerberg isn't "the best" songwriter" ever - he's just the one you identify with......same with Johnny Thunders as a guitarist.....but Alex Chilton well he could make a case as being the legit most gifted singer in Rock history - he was that great.
This is his greatest vocal, an eerie and ghostly take on the standard and it's what his followers at least - of whom he has many - couldn't really do:
My new favorite band covers the greatest female sung song ever (Kirsty MacColl's original) and they do it stupendously and don't change the words either (because you don't have to), and get the great repeated closing down pat naturally.........AND offer you clues about the band themselves - bubblegum being chewed, strawberry milkshakes, and buttons the reference Stiff Records and The Buzzcocks.
Listen, it's always nice when you fall in love.......and pacinoyes has fallen in love very hard with The Speedways - the best power pop band since The Exploding Hearts nearly 20 years ago. Yeah, yeah I know you'll say "Who's 2nd best then and they aren't THAT good!" but that isn't the point is it smart-ass!
I (strongly) recommend you go on Youtube, play their 2 fantastic albums (2018, 2020) and on those there's 2 B-sides including this new cover of Billy Ocean's 1970s pop hit....this cover is bouncier, sweeter, lays on the guitar cleverly and it's more fun than the original song too.
This came out earlier this Summer and it's as bad-ass as you might expect and it's also clever too - takes swipes at the Beat Generation, Generation X and Generation Z in this cover.
Besides being one of the last true genuine Rock stars (a dying breed), a great guitarist/songwriter White is also a covers specialist (that's also a dying breed btw) and has popped up a few times in this thread .......at every stage of his career.
From a dynamite covers album - his last - this piece of cultural appropriation is gloriously out of fashion in 2020 but so am I so it's ok I guess...... ........a re-working of the Chambers Brothers song......
