So strange it's not on Youtube anymore, but I'm really into the Phoebe Bridgers and Maggie Rogers cover of Iris right now.

My mind is blown that Heart's is not the original version.

The Speedways SOS
Worlds best young band (or right up there with Fontaines DC) covers ABBA from their stupendous covers EP....replaces the keyboard parts with guitars rather cleverly too....

Nick the Knife takes the Springsteen out of John Hiatt's original and replaces it with his light - but not gentle - wit

Brad Marino Monkey Man (2021)See, this is why you never know in life......yesterday the great Ike Reilly who almost never messes up - dropped a 7 minute new single (wtf) and it's utterly average so for him a dud imo. Meanwhile..... (the only sometimes great) Brad Marino who had an utterly average solo career up until 2021 where he made one of the years best albums .........and now he covers a song he shouldn't even try to cover and which he does ........really lovingly and well......and faithfully as a Charlie Watts tribute. You just never know..........anything.........what's next ABBA is going to do new music or something?

Fontaines DC One (2022)The mighty Fontaines DC - in 2022 the worlds best band, maybe......arguably ........non-Speedways division (um) - covering their country's best most famous band. There's also a live streaming event of the band playing Dublin tonight - link below but you might want to check Youtube to see if there's something better where you live
Happy St. Patty's Day.

Brad Marino Another Sad and Lonely Night (2022) cover of the Bobby Fuller Four
Brad Marino since his going to be hard to beat Looking For Trouble album (pacinoyes #5 of 2021) has released one great faithful cover - of The Stones' Monkey Man and 2 songs that totally sound like 60s covers but aren't (She's Doing Her Thing and Girl, I Want You).
Here he teams up with ex-bandmate Mr. Versatility Geoff Palmer and problematic Punk legend Joe Queer (he's not!) to do one of the 60s most slightly famous / slightly obscure songs in marvelous energetic fashion.
Said this before: Marino & Palmer are like the Lowe / Edmunds of this era - cranking out good songs together and apart - originals or covers - for over a decade and lately some REALLY good albums (Palmer was my #3 of 2021, the New Trocaderos one of the best of 2015) whenever they feel like it whether anyone is listening or not.....under multiple forms / names including The Connection etc.

Kate Clover Your Phone's Off The Hook, But You're Not (cover of X) Released As A New Single on May 18th 2022
Kate the Great is still the only American music that I've really liked (so far) in 2022 - her infectious debut album, one of the year's best - perfectly integrates everything winning about her persona: her look, influences, retro style into the music itself.
...........and she follows it up with a new song covering one of her best & biggest influences - and does it flawlessly - which is pretty much the only level that Kate Clover exists on at the moment.

The Coolies King of Confusion (cover of The Go-Gos) (2022)
The late, great Kim Shattuck does the spoken voice over talking at the middle / end of a new, better (!) cover of the Go-Go's obscurity - with Kathy Valentine of that band appearing here - alongside the two surviving Coolies and Blondie drummer extraordinaire Clem Burke. This is kinda awesome - rescuing the original song and bringing Kim back too ........ goes perfectly with their only EP (Uh-Oh! It's The Coolies (2019)).
RIP

The Bobby Lees Be My Enemy (2022) - cover of The Waterboys The King is Dead........long live the New King. New best cover of the year - all the top 3 are from females singers btw so far - this takes a great song and makes it faster, better, shorter and more manic and unhinged. This vocal by the actress Sam Quartin - obliterates everything this year......... and this has been a great year for songs and singing. She sounds possessed.

Lucy & The Rats (?) - or possibly The Bats (?) - 2022 (I guess?) 2000 Man - cover of The Rolling Stones ..........(and KISS too!)I don't know what this is - but the new online tracklisting for a compilation on Stardumb says "Lucy and The Bats" - now that's either a typo - or my beloved Lucy Ellis is recording with New Zealand legends The Bats - instead of her band The Rats (um) - possble I guess..........I dunno ........ .........oh and I don't know when this was even recorded but I never heard it - I'm assuming it's new (?) - but it's lovely, and of course she sings it lovely too since she has the best and sweetest female voice in Rock......also she has her thick Aussie accent in full play to charming effect. Love her........I love way she sings "affaiiiiiiiiir" in that cute Australian way - just like how Nicole Kidman says "beeeeeeeeeeeeear" when talking about Paddington

Wet Leg Smoko (cover of The Chats)One of the best albums of 2022, several great singles - that go back to 2021 in a few cases - one of the best songs ( Piece of Shit) of 2022, one of the best covers ( Life Is A Rollercoaster) of 2022 ...........and now another ace cover - doing Australian brats - The Chats "Smoko" - but as a chillwave synth Pop song......and they do it better too.......artist of the year? Maybe.....maybe.... urbanpatrician who knows what's up.......get to that CMAT album yet? Ah, nevermind dude......

The Speedways Back of My Hand (The Jags cover)Power Pop royalty improves on the famous Power Pop song - live - they speed it up, Punk it up and make it zip - even though they botch the ending.

So someone took those old Alvin & the Chipmunks cover albums from the '80s and slowed them down, which reveals what the vocals actually sounded like while the instrumentation remains slowed down and creates these horrific post-punk/sludge rock versions of the tracks. Some of these (specifically, Bette Davis Eyes and Heaven is a Place on Earth) are un-ironically some of my favorite covers.
