Luchino Visconti famously refused to spare any expense on his film sets. He insisted that drawers be stocked with silk shirts and decanters be filled with real vodka instead of water. When told that no one would know the difference, he replied, “My actors will know.” Okay, go!

Well I found it interesting... Who's your favorite director? The one with the hot wife, duh. In my current state, my favorite director is Steven Soderbergh.

Oh, yes - surprised I forgot that he'd be your choice. I love Sex, Lies, and Videotape - it's probably my favorite of 1989. Give or take C rimes and Misdemeanors.

David Lynch: While in college, roomed with Peter Wolf, former lead singer with the J. Geils Band. Lynch kicked him out, however, because he thought Wolf was "too weird."
Werner Herzog: Oh lord, where to begin. He was famously shot with an air rifle while doing an interview with the BBC in a Los Angeles park, he saved Joaquin Phoenix from a car accident, he ate his own shoe, he once ate marijuana-laced marmalade, his bouts with Kinski are the stuff of legend, the list goes on.
Paul Thomas Anderson: He is the only person to win all three directing prizes at the three major film festivals: Cannes, Venice and Berlin.

Visconti squandered all his family's wealth on things like this (and coming from a noble family, it was huge).

Refn - Despite directing Drive (2011), he doesn't have a drivers' license. He failed his driving test 8 times.
Fincher - was very close to directing Lords of Dogtown but dropped out (remained on as a producer)

Not my fav (he'd make my Top 50), and only trivia-adjacent but have to share.... According to this site - the earliest known use of the term "easy-peasy" is from a January 1953 review of David Lean's The Sound Barrier. Interestinggggg.

Spike Lee: According to Lee, he was first inspired to make films while watching Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter. One of the actors in that film, John Savage, would later appear in Lee's Do The Right Thing. Another interesting tidbit is that while studying at NYU, some of his fellow classmates included Ang Lee, Oliver Stone, and Jim Jarmusch. One of his professors was Martin Scorsese, who he would befriend and Scorsese would become a mentor to Lee.
David Fincher: While growing up in Marin County, one of his neighbors was George Lucas. He later worked on the special effects crew for Lucas' Return of The Jedi.
Martin Scorsese: As a child, Scorsese was an altar boy at Old St. Patrick's Cathedral. The cathedral is also known as the place where Michael Corleone's nephew is baptized in The Godfather. Two pillars of American cinema that would have profound impact on the Gangster genre.

I was actually listening to a podcast on Temple of Doom recently, and they mentioned that Fincher was involved with the SFX crew on that film. I totally forget that. I guess it really explains why he's so good at integrating special effects.

Interesting..I didn't know that either, although that would make sense because I know Industrial Light & Magic (which Lucas founded) did alot of the effects work for Spielberg's films in the 80s and 90s, so they probably brought all the effects crew from Return of The Jedi onboard to the Temple of Doom movie. Like you said, Fincher is great at integrating special effects and he learned his craft with the best in the business, especially during that time.

Fincher I believe acknowledges it was a huge stepping-stone in his career. His time as a ILM crew member was basically a beginner guide for him as a filmmaker.

Marty and George Romero used to rent out the same movie at the same video store in Manhattan

Rohmer was heavily against smoking and saw it as an act of violence. He also apparently was not a fan of loud music.
He was heavily scrutinized by the Cahiers du cinema in the 70's after formerly being the lead editor. This interview is very famous in that regard:
Eric Rohmer was extremely secretive about his personal life, so much so that his mother never got to know he was a famous director. His wife and children allegedly never met his close work associates before 2010 at his deathbed (which is like the complete opposite of Chabrol who had his family work on his sets).

In the late 70s, after the failure of "New York, New York" Scorsese was a cocaine addict, he went on coma for several days and nearly died of overdose.
