She's a very great actress and a very odd one too - didn't get nominated for an Oscar until she was close to 50..........basically in America had sort of a salacious reputation tied to Caligula and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover etc. as someone who often appeared nude/topless in films. I don't think people quite equated the name with the face and the work but once her career clicked in that shallow way her stature caught up to all of that.
To me Prime Suspect is clearly her greatest work but she's really major in every way in a lot of stuff.

The Queen and Gosford Park are sensational work. The Queen is especially one of the best best actress winners of all time imo.

I actually really like her Oscar-winning performance, even though its popularity has waned considerably in the last decade.
As for her best overall work, Elizabeth I and all of Prime Suspect are tops. I also wanna give a shout-out to The Madness of King George and Cal, both of which I think she's sensational in.

LMAO. once again, pacinoyes knows what he's talking about. The revisionist praise for her Cook/Thief/Wife performance is stupid. It just continued her long line of boobage baring roles - now she adds cock sucking to her repertoire. And that was her reputation up until that point. And considering how Michael Gambon totally owned her in it.... not that she was that bad though, not great either. I mean, if Judi Dench was around in films before 50, she'd be doing the same thing Mirren did. I don't think either distinguishes themselves among other actresses of the period until elder damehood.
Top 5 from The Lady: (my nominations for her so far) The Comfort of Strangers The Madness of King George The Last Station Elizabeth I The Roman Springs of Mr. Stone Do not get what people think stands out about her Prime Suspect performance. Though I admit I didn't get too deep into it because the show isn't interesting to me. Not very interested in those old ladies/hotel marigold comedies so I haven't seen Calendar Girls, Leisure Seeker, Hundred Foot Journey, etc.... I'm almost certain her Catherine the Great performance will be THE performance of the year for me in 2018.

Leaving Prime Suspect to one side, I'll always throw love behind her performance in The Queen.

Gosford Park. I'd also like to give a little shoutout to her underseen work in The Debt.

Her work over the years on Prime Suspect is on a whole other level to everything else she's ever done. I think the best she's ever been on the big screen was in The Last Station.
