Looking back, what are your thoughts on his performance. First time around him found him a bit mannered but it did improve for me after a few re-watches.

Best of the nominees by a longshot. His only real competition is Hoffman for Synecdoche, New York.

An expertly executed impersonation, but an impersonation nonetheless. Not a bad performance, but in light of what he was up against that year, his win still feels regrettable.

I like this win over his win in Mystic River, which I thought he also deserved. It proved that he's one of his generations greatest actors. Right after Daniel Day-Lewis and Denzel Washington.

Rourke would have been my pick that year, but Penn is a worthy winner and it's one of his best performances.

I remember being so certain Rourke would win, and was overjoyed when Penn won. It was a really important role and film and he nailed it.

Can't really say if it's held up, I saw it for the first and only time in like 2014 and I was a fan, especially what Van Sant to make it feel fresher as opposed to what could have been stale, the editing also stood out to me if I recall correctly.
