Not gonna lie, those are some horrible jokes... and I know a little something something about bad humor.
Still, if we are to hold everyone accountable for their former actions and words then basically half the music industry would cease to exist.

I knew he always had a pretty fucked up sense of humor (just watch Super), but there’s definitely lines in any profession, even entertainment, that just shouldn’t be crossed.

Honestly it's not the comments themselves that annoy me (they were disgusting and unforgivable unfunny jokes, yes), it's the fact that they fired him over tweets that he apologized about, and were only brought-up again because of the alt-right. Fucking hell Disney, you've made the right feel stronger, nice going. Also you should have know what you're getting into when you hired the guy who co-wrote Tromeo & Juliet. Infuriating.

Shoulda been something they should've looked into back when they hired him for the first one.

Holy shit, that's huge and happened so quick. Gunn always seemed like a genuinely nice guy and was a supporter of that whole anti-Spacey/Weinstein thing, so it's very disappointing to read this.
I hope Taika Waititi takes over GOTG3, as he's the only person in the MCU whose sensibilities and sense of humor seem lined-up with what this franchise standed for.

I have an issue when people bitch about ‘snowflakes’ and advocate for free speech and then go and dig up these old tweets just to try and ruin someone’s career. Some of those jokes were definitely fucked up and I’m not going to try and defend Gunn, but I guarantee you the same people that dug up those tweets are not principled and would defend someone on the right that did the exact same thing. More people need to realize that there’s people on both sides that get offended and that are ‘snowflakes’. This situation being a prime example.

I'm uncomfortable with this. The tweets are horrible, of course, but he has clearly demonstrated in the years since that he's not that anymore. This feels to me like an abuse of outrage culture. Now it doesn't matter even if you've grown or reformed, anything you've ever said will be used against you in perpetuity.

Yeah I can understand getting canned for hate speech, but do I even have to get into the type of people who get away with these jokes and worse who still have jobs?

It's one thing if Disney made him publicly acknowledge his past shittiness as something of an example to the youths of the world. "Be careful of what you tweet, kids, because anything you do or say could have ramifications down the line!" But outright canning the guy for things that were said before you even hired him for the first film (something that should've been noted when you were hiring him in the first place)? Yeah, that's a bridge too far.

Well that clears everything up. The series is squeaky clean now. Everyone who remains now has a perfect record of behavior past and present, especially that guy that plays Iron Man.

His tweets are beyond horrible. I guess what I don't get is why do they not delete them and who is digging these up. This is like the 3rd incident this week.

It was Mike Cernovich of Infowars who dug this up, apparently since James Gunn badmouthed Trump. Don’t assume Mike Cernovich is a virtuous fella though. Even if you ignore his rape charge (he plead down to a misdemeanor), he’s made a lot of comments describing rape as a non-issue, saying things like “date rape doesn’t exist” and once forged a legal document to accuse Chuck Schumer of sexual harassment. He also had a very funny reddit AMA in December which was largely filled with people making fun of him and bringing up all of the gross things he’s said. Basically, he didn’t expose James Gunn’s past tweets because of any moral issue. He exposed the tweets because James Gunn talked badly about Trump.

His tweets are definitely in bad taste but I hate this sort of puritanism going around. It would be impossible for anybody to live up to it. It used to come from the religious right and now it comes from the so called tolerant left and it's starting to eat its own.

David Ehrlich from IndieWire tweeted something earlier today regarding to this that made me think a lot about my reaction to this stuff:
&
Isn't it a bit fucked up that we're so quick to grab our forks to expel artists who say/think things that are problematic and sit and do nothing when the people who actually matter ACTUALLY do problematic things?
