Any particular reason you guys hate Spirit so much?
I don't mind it, tbh. It's safe and boring in a way that Beyoncé rarely has been the past few years and I basically forgot all about it the second it was over, but eh. They could do worse. I have no qualms with the notion of Beyoncé being an Oscar winner after the decade she's had even if I could take or leave this track in particular.

I actually do like Beyonce, but I hate that song for some reason.

The song itself is just... meh to me (I don’t care for Beyoncé), but in context, it’s hilariously out of place. It doesn’t fit with John’s songs, it comes completely out of nowhere, and where they’ve placed it, it has no point except to exist. I would honestly be more forgiving if it were just an end credits insert, instead of dropping it wherever was convenient in the main film.

Any particular reason you guys hate Spirit so much? Love Bey but can't even fathom the energy it would take to hate that song since listening to it saps my life force. It's the blandest song in her whole canon. "Beautiful Ghosts" was more interesting. Swift was going for something more soulful and haunting and came up with a pretty unique track, whereas Spirit feels like pure anthem formula like something a software program would've created. Haven't listened to the entire shortlist but of the ones I've heard, my favs are Daily Battles (even better than Suspirium, I said it), Stand Up and Glasgow. Predicting the latter two to sneak in but I think Yorke is probably out.

That they placed right after the first rendition of “Memory” certainly tells you that, like they didn’t have confidence in this song to do well enough on its own, so they had to lump it next to the most famous song from the show, that way they’d *have* to give it some notice. But it doesn’t really add anything. It’s beautiful, but there’s no reason for it to be there (and partly why I’m not sure it’ll make *my* personal line-ups). I rarely take those kinds of things into consideration at all. I've included many songs in my lineups for films I haven't seen (you think I was going to suffer through Fifty Shades of Grey just to validate my obsession for Love Me Like You Do? yeeeeah NO). I always try to approach the categories as self-contained elements. They're not obviously, but I find that it's a more equitable approach and it makes it easier to appreciate things in films that I've otherwise hated. All that being said, original song is far and away the easiest category to isolate because what's being judged is the song itself (music and/or lyrics) and I don't see it as being necessary to extend that to directorial choices (i.e. how the song was used/placed). Also it doesn't seem fair to not nominate a song just because it's in a film that you'd otherwise not be interested in seeing. I can't imagine deciding to watch Quincy or Dumplin' last year just for the sake of experiencing Girl in the Movies and Keep Reachin in context. For me it's enough just to appreciate the songs themselves.

Tommen_Saperstein See, I’m weird like that. I was going to see Cats regardless, but I will deliberately track down badly reviewed movies, solely because of aspects I think I’ll nominate (Score, Makeup, etc.). I did in fact force myself to watch Fifty Shades for that song. But I get what you mean. That’s long been something I’ve criticized the Academy for, and admittedly something that even we indulged in on IMDb. Equating things like “Best Original Song” to “Best film that happened to have an original song in it.” And perhaps that’s not a bad way to approach it. “Beautiful Ghosts” May be shaky in context, but if you take it as it’s own piece of storytelling, it’s more deserving than a lot of what’s going to take it’s place (both at the Oscars, and possibly here), but because of the terrible reception, nobody’ll so much as give it the time of day, which is a shame.

Now with 30% more furry porn. But seriously, if they were gonna improve this movie, they’d have to alter 70% of the damn film. I watched some of the 1998 film and there is no plot. No dialogue. A theatre director should have been hired. Well, I'll tell you what happens. There's a bunch of cats, and one of them is real sick and tired. So the other cats put on a show to cheer her up. Then they put her on a tire and shoot her through the roof.
