The Kinks are one of the greatest rock bands of all time. In their classic 66-70 period they had one of the great runs ever, with only The Beatles during the same period and Radiohead in the 90's being as good to me. Arthur is probably a top ten record of all time for me. But sometimes it's better to leave that stuff in the past and for a great band to just be done. Hopefully it turns out to be good. Also- "So which of the Kinks will be getting back to together?" "Those that are still alive"

I love The Kinks and this could be good too because Ray Davies last album was surprisingly quite good I thought.
I don't find them as spectacular as an album band as some do - a lot of the mid-60s albums were too fey (too British, too genteel) for me as full albums but The Kink Kronikles which covers that same era can stand with Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy and Hot Rocks as the best compilations ever assembled - the best songs are that great - and Arthur as a stand alone work is a masterpiece for me too. The Kinks in a lot of ways are the opposite of The Beatles or to me they are more like The Beatles if John did all the writing - The Beatles overall had something for everyone but The Kinks had something more alluringly specific. If you saw the world like Ray (unfair, vulgar, hilarious) or you were like Ray himself (sarcastic, smart, funny, a contradiction of gentle AND mean but essentially an optimist) - well he could make you feel like the world in all its contradictions was also big and beautiful enough for you to belong to it too.

Hmmm, The Kinks are way more pop than John and they pretty much completely ignored psychedelia. But John and Ray definitely did have a similar worldview and the lyricism was similar. A combination of gentle and mean is a good way to describe both Ray and John and is what a lot of people miss about John with all the "sensitive flower child" revisionism you hear about him these days.
