And I do generally side with him on the "they were on a break" debate (although to be fair to Rachel, it's still sleazy that he rebounded so quickly), and I low-key think that his boss who ate his sandwich is one of the foulest characters in sitcom history. To me, the whole "they were on a break" debate is basically missing the whole point. I get why the fans get so riled up (I swear to god, the Friends board on IMDB was basically 95% weekly arguments about who was in the wrong, always going past 200 posts each time it got brought up again), but in all honesty neither of them was at fault. Ross had every reason to believe that they were through at that point (especially since Rachel had Mark over at her place), which means he didn't really cheat, but on the other hand, she had every right to be hurt and not want to take him back. I never saw it as a situation where one is right and the other isn't. The real story is what led to the break in the first place, and I'm a lot less forgiving about that one. Ross fucked up that relationship big time. The shit he pulled on Rachel throughout the season was just terrible, which is why I never got swept up in the whole "will they won't they" thing. They just shouldn't. 100% agreed re: Susan, though. Jesus, her shit angered me to no end.

Ross fucked up that relationship big time. The shit he pulled on Rachel throughout the season was just terrible, which is why I never got swept up in the whole "will they won't they" thing. They just shouldn't. Exactly. Ross and Rachel just weren't a good couple at all. Aniston and Schwimmer had chemistry, no doubt, but after seeing how that initial relationship imploded, I really didn't give a shit about them being together. Also, it should be noted that every time a love interest came along and the writers wanted to "get characters back together" or "create conflict", they really shafted the love interest so that by the time they left, we hated them. Emily was perfectly lovely (and fully justified in her anger after the altar incident), but the writers tried to make her an unsympathetic harridan just because she had the audacity to tell Ross that she wasn't comfortable with him spending time with Rachel. Janine was a good match for Joey, but they wound up making her an unlikable bitch in her final episode because of some stupid contrivance over him having to choose between her and Chandler/Monica. Kathy was a perfect match for Chandler (and the conflict between Joey and Chandler resulted in one of my favorite episode arcs), but then they wind up making her cheat on Chandler for the hell of it, despite Brewster being really close with the cast and having fantastic chemistry with Perry. Rinse and repeat with the likes of Charlie, Jon Favreau (that stupid wrestling resolution!), etc.

Chandler.
Was a best friend to Ross and Joey (lending the latter a lot of money). He was faithful to Monica (undeserved because she became an overbearing bitch), related to Rachel in the early years, and never made fun of Phoebe's quirkiness ( a la Ross).
I never found Chandler to be homophobic; he was messed up a lot. And if I remember correctly it was one early episode that incident happened.

In terms of 'niceness': 1) Joey 2) Chandler 3) Monica 4) Rachel 5) Phoebe 6) Ross
My general ranking of them as characters: 1) Rachel (Aniston was the star of the show, by miles) 2) Chandler 3) Monica 4) Ross 5) Phoebe 6) Joey
I have to say I love the show. It's not really one of the great comedy TV shows a la Seinfeld or It's Always Sunny, but it might be the most purely enjoyable, re-watchable show out there for me. However, I do agree to some extent that if you think about it, none of them are particularly nice overall, though they all have their moments.

To be fair, that isn't Ross's first time dealing with a question of masculinity. In one episode he finds Ben playing with a Barbie doll, panics, and swaps it out with a G.I. Joe. I have a love/hate relationship with Ross. He is pompous, pretentious and generally winds up in either toxic relationships or shows a huge immaturity that makes him unsuited for a long-term one. But he's also immensely sympathetic when it comes to the Carol/Susan situation (regardless of how you feel about Ross, he didn't deserve the loathing that Susan directed at him, and her co-opting control over Ben and trying to oust Ross as a parental figure is fucked up), and when the show tries to make Ross the butt of the joke (as it often did in the latter seasons, when they realized Schwimmer's mastery at physical comedy was a potential goldmine), he winds up being more sympathetic because, well, he's being picked on by assholes. And I do generally side with him on the "they were on a break" debate (although to be fair to Rachel, it's still sleazy that he rebounded so quickly), and I low-key think that his boss who ate his sandwich is one of the foulest characters in sitcom history.AND HE DIDN'T EVEN FINISH IT! It had the moist maker! But even he is second only to Lily from How I Met Your Mother (easily the worst "friend" in the history of television, bar none). Preach! I am so 100% in agreement with your Lily hate.
