How are the rap fans on this board feeling about this album?
I've been kind of surprised at the reaction to this one, a lot of people seem disappointed in it and I've seen some reviewers consider it one of Nas' worst albums. I'm sure some of the reaction has to do with what Kelis has said about him being emotionally and physically abusive during their marriage and with this album coming out without addressing the accusation. Though I understand and do not take issue with critics not wanting to use their voice or platform to elevate a man they suspect of being an abuser, I must say I'm not in the same boat with how this album has been received. To me, Nasir is a really terrific album with Kanye once again coming through with stellar production and Nas being more than up to the task living up to his reputation as one of the best lyricists in rap history. The 7 deadly sins overarching theme is potent and well-developed, the political content is on point, and the overall flow of the album is excellent. After a couple listens, "Cops Shot the Kid" and "Adam and Eve" are probably my favorite songs off the album.
The only major criticism I have with the album are that the line about vaccine side effects on "Everything" should have been cut since it is not only some anti-vaxxer bullshit (can't believe Nas is still on that) but it also cheapens what to that point been a good extended metaphor about undergoing pain only to come out stronger. I also would have liked Nas to at least address what Kelis said, though I can see why he didn't and think that if anything her accusations negatively affect my perception of Life is Good more than this.
So yeah, curious to see what people on here think.
