If talking about regression Zhang Yimou is the worst. Every single film he's made since Hero has been absolutely horrid. Tbh it starts earlier. His debut film (Red Sorghum) is his best and also his most influential by leaps and bounds. The rest of his career seems almost like a continous regression with some ocassional bounces back up. I mean his critically acclaimed body of work is basically his first 6 films (excluding Code Name Cougar) + Hero and House of Flying Daggers half a decade later.

J.J. Abrams is a being a talentless, stealing hack (same with his buddies Orci and Kurtzman).
Jean-Luc Godard has never made a passable movie. Actually, the French New Wave guys in general are just the worst. I've liked some of Rivette, I guess.
Fellini made a couple of good films (Amarcord, La Dolce Vita) and a whole lot of garbage.
Goro Miyazaki is a blight upon the world of cartoons.

Among respected directors I don't think there's that many (or I just don't think they're respected I guess). I'm definitely not big on: - Wong Kar-Wai (vapid, poorly blocked, frictionless, incredibly repetitive, borderline kitsch - though Fallen Angels and Days of Being Wild look better than anything I've actually seen by him) - Ridley Scott (Lost all his ability to direct to cynicism) Haneke has made some exceptional films but in memory comes of pretty stupid and stubborn in interviews. A girl I once met told me an anecdote about how she met both Haneke and Tarr and Haneke came across like an absolute prick at some wedding, while Tarr went out drinking with audience members after a Satantango screening and was aparently a super chill guy. Days of Being Wild is more subdued and restrained for a wkw film so you might actually go for that one. it's also a masterpiece imo. fallen angels i'm not so sure. agreed on haneke.

Yeah, I was about to watch it a number of times. Will probably get around to it before the year is over. Figured out I didn't like Wong Kar Wai very much after rewatching In the Mood for Love.
