Lisa Cholodenko
Seen every film she's done. And Olive Kitteridge. Gave up Unbelievable after one episode. She's like a lazier Kenneth Lonergan, but there's still something that makes me want to keep watching her films. Low expectations I guess.

Tarantino. I watch everything he makes, I've never not been entertained by any work that he's made on some level or other, but I find his endless love of excess to be tiring, and when I enjoy his stuff it is often in spite of so much going on in them. There is such a massive degree of self congratulatory, masturbatory, obnoxious narcissism (how do you watch the end of IB and not throw up?) in them that comes across loud and clear and it's often tough to bear. Plus, I have yet to read an argument for anything he has ever made from anyone, anywhere in a good 20 years that makes me think of him as anything than gloriously vulgar pop auteur. To me he's like Michael Bay for a slightly older generation. Fun, not great. Not usually. Nolan. This idea that's been championed really since The Dark Knight, but to some degree since The Prestige that he makes intelligent blockbusters just makes me laugh. A movie is not intelligent or grown up because of the themes it explores, it is so on account of the way it goes about exploring them. This dudes childish screenplays talk down to his audience in the most condescending manner. It's like walking into a museum, having some guy come take you by the hand at the door and walk you through the building explaining everything to you. These are not intelligent movies (at least from Insomnia to Interstellar) they're movies about interesting subjects for stupid people. David O. Russell. From Spanking the Monkey through The Fighter he certainly had his moments (though I think Flirting with Disaster and Three Kings are stupidly overpraised) but Silver Linings onwards the degradation of this man has been staggering. It's like The Sound and the Fury in reverse, and by the time you come to Joy it's like the creation of someone with multiple personality disorder and borders on unwatchable. Not to mention all the simplistic psychology in these movies their defenders tried to Emperors New Clothes, not to mention his often grotesque male gaze-y tendencies that were good as ignored while folks like the more viewed, less pretentious Michael Bay was vilified for. Sam Mendes. This guy is for sure very competent, he's always had the smarts to work with strong DP's and transitioned from theatre very well, but when you stop for a second go back and look at his work and realize basically every movie he's made is like some stylistic or thematic rip off of other movies that have come before it and feel bland and rote to the nth degree it's just hard to continue taking him seriously. Not bad, just not good. James Gray does something similar, but he at least tries to go somewhere new and interesting with his writing, even if it doesn't always land. Jean-Luc Godard. Like all film students (or all I've encountered anyway) I was as enamoured with his iconic 60s run as most teens/early 20s folks are, but a few years ago I made the mistake of rewatching some of this stuff, and half those movies (more than half, most of them save Le Mepris, and maybe to a lesser extent Vivre Sa Vie and Weekend) are so pompous they're hard to sit through without laughing at them. I used to champion this guy over Tarantino who was so obviously inspired by him, but in my dotage have come to appreciate that certainly during this period he was every bit as bad. Last and least I was really starting to get sick of Inarritu's pompous, self important, morally superior horse crap and thought Birdman was the climactic point at which he finally well and truly vanished up his own ass, but with his follow up I found him to be well and truly born again (mystical mumbo jumbo and mawkishly fictionalized wife and son aside) and I am eagerly waiting to see what happens next. They're the first ones that come to mind, the more respected ones anyway. Half the time my issues are more with the fan base trying to elevate them on to some level of which I find them to be wholly unworthy than with their work itself.

Mel Gibson. His movies always feel like inflated anecdotes, a third act of something grander
Tarantino. I like OUATIH a lot, that goes without saying I'm still conflicted about the mish mash of the last part but left me thinking in ways any other of his films did. He barely breaks the bubble where his films exists.
Nolan. Since 2006 he's been making overly convoluted movies that without the orchestration the risibility of the screenplays would be less easier to tolerate.
Barry Jenkins. a hack
And there's a few others directors I like but from a few years ago they're going in the wrong direction: As someone else said Zhang Yimou, Shadow seems like a return to form but watching it only made me yearn for the prior Hero years, same goes for Ang Lee. Cuarón's movies from the last decade demand to be accepted as they are and Kaurismaki's latest films have been trending more and more towards political dramas with carefully scripted messages, he's enormously effective when he stays "local".

Clint Eastwood (hands down the most overrated American director of all time) Finally, someone on the same page! (He isnt bad, but just the GOAT stuff is very baffling to me) I mean I try to remain open minded about directors work-wise cus they could surprise or have good films behind them (like DOR had I Heart Huckabees which I quite like. For Hooper I like TKS, just not in the way which like warrants BP over TSN; these are just a few), but I really am off put by the ones who are just dicks in general. Some off the top of the head include, well, Polanski, DOR and Hooper (I don't hate their work, I am not a fan of them as people). Kechiche as well, fuck that guy so much. Von Trier is also an example of this.

I've come around on Woody Allen big time. Still not a fan of some of the "biggies" like Annie Hall, Interiors, Hannah and Her Sisters (Manhattan is a foggy memory I need to revisit). Don't really care for his nostalgic side either (Purple Rose, Midnight in Paris). But I've kind of fallen in love with his late 80s/early 90s period... especially Crimes and Misdemeanors (his best "Bergman"/existentialist tribute imo, with a real lightness of touch), Husbands and Wives and Manhattan Murder Mystery which has to be one of the funniest movies I've seen. It's like his neuroses finally clicked for me. And still have a lot to see from the 90s, so looking forward to that. We can officially remove him from the blacklist... only Fellini/Iñarritu remain

Guillermo Del Toro. Haven't liked anything he's done after Blade 2. It's embarrassing that he is a Best Director winner.
Barry Jenkins. Didn't like Moonlight. Didn't like what I saw of Beale Street.
Zack Snyder.
Jeff Nichols. Drab sensibility.
Taika Waititi. I just find him silly and stupid, both his public persona, and his movies.
Baz Luhrmann. Tacky.

Among respected directors I don't think there's that many (or I just don't think they're respected I guess).
I'm definitely not big on:
- Wong Kar-Wai (vapid, poorly blocked, frictionless, incredibly repetitive, borderline kitsch - though Fallen Angels and Days of Being Wild look better than anything I've actually seen by him)
- Ridley Scott (Lost all his ability to direct to cynicism)
Haneke has made some exceptional films but in memory comes of pretty stupid and stubborn in interviews. A girl I once met told me an anecdote about how she met both Haneke and Tarr and Haneke came across like an absolute prick at some wedding, while Tarr went out drinking with audience members after a Satantango screening and was aparently a super chill guy.
