Interestingly, I think that a lot of the stuff you and scrudpup generally praise Denzel Washington for, one can see the very same traits in Gosling. The way that both men developed a brand for playing cool, level-headed badasses show a remarkable parallel. The difference is that Gosling's gone the auteur route, whereas Washington is more mainstream. The only thing Gosling doesn't have is the stage rep, but there's still time for that. It speaks to an interesting discussion: who are the heirs to the current greats? I've heard Gyllenhaal argued as Denzel's heir, but could it be Gosling? Gosling can play cool and level headed badasses, but he doesn't have Denzel"s rage. Washington is both fire and ice, and he mixes and matches depending on the role. But when he wants to go full-on volcanic, he can go into territory that I don't think Gosling is really capable of. Like Fences.... I don't know about that. The Believer, Blue Valentine, Drive, The Place Beyond the Pines and Blade Runner 2049 all show Gosling capable of explosive rage. The scene in 2049, for example, when he's confronted with the realization that his dreams are real and that he knows it, and then all of the frustration and anger he's been keeping bottled up inside unleashes, even for a brief moment . . . it's extremely convincing. I would like to see him do something like Fences or There Will Be Blood where he has to keep that volcanic level (good word for it, by the by) consistently throughout. It likely won't be First Man, but who knows what's coming.

Phoenix and the reason I made Phoenix my choice is because of how different his roles have been. The Master , Her , YWNRH , and The Immigrant is just superb diverse work from him . Truly a remarkable talent .

Mine goes to Bale, Gyllenhaal and Phoenix.
Most notably missing would be Brad Pitt - another decade of diverse roles and captivating performances. I wonder if Ad Astra will be a new height.
