Anyone else bummed (and a bit baffled) that Michael McKean never got any love for Better Call Saul? He was one of the most compelling TV assholes ever. Such a brilliant character and performance, and not a single accolade to show for it. I honestly think it's a case where its SUCH an unlikable character that ruined any real chance of a nod. Yeah, there have been people playing total asshole characters that even won in the past (Cannavale in Boardwalk stands out as one) but even then they were considered either cool or badasses, none of which can classify the elder McGill. I guess, but I never hated Chuck. I think the show did an excellent job making him sympathetic and giving him depth. Like, it's impossible not to feel bad for him with his EHS and mental health issues, especially when he goes through therapy in the last season. Yeah he fucks Jimmy over constantly (and Jimmy retaliates), but he encounters more than his fair share of hardships and setbacks that aren't his fault. He was never just an asshole, and he's honestly one of my favorite characters in the whole BB universe.

Such a brilliant character and performance, and not a single accolade to show for it. It's frustrating for sure. Banks was robbed in Season 1 (losing to a rather subpar season for Dinklage, who deserved it for the preceding season; the Emmys always seem to be playing catch-up more than anything else) and I'd argue was still the supporting actor MVP for Season 2, but Season 3 was all McKean, and it was probably the one season thus far where I wouldn't give overall MVP status of the show to Odenkirk (or if I do, it's really close). McKean had arguably the toughest job on the show: finding the humanity in such an outsized prick of a character, making him empathetic if not sympathetic. I'm probably more irritated that Rhea Seehorn hasn't gotten any love, because Kim Wexler is one of the best female characters on television right now, but yeah, McKean got screwed. The deposition episode where he launches into his tirade in front of the judicial panel should've sealed it up for him.
