This show is the only reason I signed up for a free trial of YouTube Red (and I'm absolutely going to cancel before I get billed). I don't have that much of an attachment to the Karate Kid series since I only saw the original and the remake (both of which I actually do love), but this show is pretty fantastic. I like that Johnny is basically the main character, though Daniel does have a supporting protagonist role. It handles the nostalgia aspect nicely while also introducing new, well-rounded characters, like Daniel's daughter Sam, Johnny's protege Miguel and his own son Robby. There's equal parts heart and humor, as well as some badass karate fight scenes. Johnny gets some great character development, while we also see that Daniel can be just as much of a dick as Johnny while also maintaining some form of integrity. I also like how it ends on somewhat of a bittersweet note with all the good kids becoming the same jerk Johnny was/is, and Kreese returning for that sequel hook. I absolutely recommend checking this out, even if you have to see it by signing up for YouTube Red. Honestly, it's the only thing on there that has piqued my interest, save for maybe these docs on Demi Lovato and Gigi Gorgeous.

Loved the first two episodes, and then discovered that you had to sign up for Youtube Red to see the rest, but... YOUTUBE RED ISN'T AVAILABLE IN THIS COUNTRY! Good stuff.

Surprised at how entertaining this show is, it's full on nostalgia and I love Johnny Lawrence as a character. Really nice tributes to The Karate Kid and especially Pat Morita. William Zabka is MVP for me but I do think the whole situation with kids in seasons 2 and 3 gets a bit ridiculous.

I've had a lot of people recommend this to me lately and I even helped a student do an assignment on the show. Hoping to give this a go sometime soon.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER.
The first season is an absolutely perfect season of TV. Right up until the unnecessary, but kind of cool very final twist anyway.
Seasons 2 and 3 are nowhere near as good, I think they're way more inconsistent, but they're still very entertaining, and the high points are grand. The stuff with the kids just gets increasingly stupid to the point I'm rolling my eyes at how dumb they all are, and sighing every time we cut away from a Daniel or Johnny subplot to focus on them. I know kids are dumb, but I don't think they're THAT dumb. Certainly not that many of them.

I feel the Johnny subplots are great (in part because William Zabka is such an excellent anti-hero with great comic timing), but I could do with way less of Daniel, who comes off like a sanctimonious bore. I much, much prefer the kids subplots to Daniel's. At least they are usually entertaining, even if they defy logic at times with their actions. But Miguel, Robbie, Samantha, Tory and Hawk are far more interesting and vital characters than Daniel. At least to me.

The two massive fights (in school in s2, at the LaRusso house in s3) between the kids were beyond ridiculous, but I still prefer them to Daniel's boring ass car dealership problems. Johnny/Zabka is most definitely the main reason I keep watching the show. But I did like some of the stuff with Daniel in Japan in s3, and he could become much less lame now that he's teaming up with Johnny.

The Daniel stuff in Japan was fun, but not neccesarily because of him. It was great playback to the Karate Kid 2, and seeing Tamlyn Tomita and the actor who played Chozen (who was superb) again was the best kind of fanservice (which this show is very good at). I also think Daniel becomes most interesting when he's interacting with Johnny (the accidental double date with Johnny and Carmen in Season 2 was great). So maybe that's a positive sign for Season 4, now they have combined Dojos. But his car dealership problems just aren't interesting. And I just want to fast forward whenever he goes into some boring lecture about how Miyagi Karate is the only right and peaceful way to do Karate

To add, I don't blame Ralph Macchio. I think he does a solid acting job playing the role he's been assigned. Unfortunately, the role he's been assigned is that of a tedious wet blanket. Daniel is a bore, but he's written that way and there is only so much Macchio can do about that.

I thought Season 3 was good overall. Elisabeth Shue certainly helped coming back to this world throwing 100 MPH fastballs..she had no trouble settling back into the character of Allie.
You can tell the writers of this show are big Pro Wrestling fans with their understanding of when to make characters faces or heels. The big face turn by one of the characters at the end of the season I didn’t see coming. But I agree with scrud and viced...less Daniel car dealership problems please.

Had not watched this show but saw most of season 3 while visiting my mother's and had some fun with it. Pretty easy to get a quick grasp on what happened and where each character was that, it all seemed pretty efficiently laid out. I think the storytelling comparison sirchuck23 made with pro wrestling holds a lot of weight, not just with face and heel turns but also with how the factions ebb and flow and the silly retro form of '80s machismo (you know what builds feeling in your legs? A Dee Snider concert). The storytelling on the whole was predictable - I saw that season finale coming three episodes back - but in broadly satisfying ways. It was predictable because it's solid storytelling mechanics rather than mere laziness. The first episode or two I saw had the Daniel car dealership shit that was a bore but thankfully I was spared that with the foray into Okinawa - and the much-needed dozen flashbacks to The Karate Kid II - which was solid and from there on it seemed like the writers found better ways to interweave LaRusso into the more interesting plot revolving around Kreese and Johnny Lawrence. Both Kove and Zabka are excellent, relishing every opportunity to tear into the meat of these characters. Zabka especially has a ton to do and rings out every bit of comedy he can without overplaying it to the point of buffoonery. Speaking of overplaying, the plot revolving around the kids is a hell of a lot and yet it still worked fine as entertainment. Much like wrestling, not every storyline has the gravity of the main event, and as an undercard the kids were well-defined, varied, and game enough to keep things moving along nicely. Shit's fun, simple as that.

Loved Chozen in Season 3 and as much as I hate the stuff with the kids the writers have done a good job with the nostalgia aspects.

Did anyone watch Season 4? Thomas Ian Griffith as Terry Silver was fantastic. Zabka is still hilarious. Big improvement from Season 3 where some of the younger actors are given more depth.

Zabka was damn good in some very heavy moments this season ("love you too Robby"... his actual big scene with Robby). Much more than just "hilarious."
Thomas Ian Griffith was a great addition... almost a Walken-esque presence. This was Martin Kove's best season yet too... and the (slight) humanization of Kreese was long overdue.
Robby and Tory might've been the easiest characters to root for this season tbh. Sam was annoying for the majority, but awesome under Johnny's tutelage (as expected).
Overall, this might have been the best season since the first. Minimal nonsense, and most characters were handled well. Wish the Johnny/Daniel team-up went a little more smoothly (though their big showdown was kind of epic) but everything that happened between them made sense by the end.

Loved Season 4 as much as I loved Season 1. The writers were smart to cut down some of the overblown kids fighting stuff and make the tussles way more reasonable/realistic and character-driven. Suprised how nearly EVERY SINGLE character (except for Demetri)... have a huge and powerful arc of their own. Consistent with everyone's critiques of Daniel above, his character (and with it naturally Machio's perf) imrpoved big time as he was finally allowed nuances into his way of thinking and doing. You can literally watch the last two TOURNAMENT episodes on a loop... even the littlest moment is so well thought out and every beat of character development feels earned (even if it's as trivial as Demetri's predictable loss to Robby). The big matches were EPIC and full of surprises that in retrospect fit everyone's arcs like perfect gloves. I got so wound up in it all that I'm now rewatching the whole series and enjoying it all over again!

I thought Season 4 was great and echo rhodoraonline's sentiments on the characters having great arcs this season. I mentioned before how it seems that the showrunners treat the show like Pro Wrestling where each season they have the characters make a turn toward being a "face" or a "heel". Although to be fair Robbie wasn't much of a heel this season as he looked after Kenny. Will be interesting to see where it goes in Season 5. Will Torrie let her anger and hurt go from seeing an adult like Amanda care about her and lead to her and Sam ending their feud? What will happen when Miguel find his father? Is he done with Karate and lost his passion for it? Robbie and Johnny's relationship, how does Hawk respond to being the "man" with winning the All-Valley tournament? Looking forward to Season 5 and I'm happy that this show has become the hit its become from starting out as a Youtube series.
Also, bravo to Tanner Buchanan and Jacob Bertrand for their performance in the championship fight this season. The best fight of the series so far from a pure athletic standpoint. The fight choreographers they're bringing in now to the show thanks to that big Netflix budget is paying off.

Well, you can tell the creators of this show are legit fans of the Karate Kid movies. Season 4 was really good.
