Yeah, I said it. Brolin is jaw droppingly good as Thanos the Mad Titan. He totally subverts any expectations of the bad guy being a giant purple, cackling CGI demi-god, and gives such a nuanced and subtle performance. The guy feels utterly real. Avengers Infinity War is Thanos movie
Ledger was great, and has been held up as the high water mark for comic book villainy for the last decade or so, but I think Brolin takes it now. Thanos is like Darth Vader, but about a 100 times more complex.
Unfortunately, while he deserves an oscar nod, I don't think Brolin will get it. As with the work of Andy Serkis, I don't think the Academy wants to set a precedent nominating work that heavily reliant on CGI and motion capture. And as much as I liked Michael B Jordan, whose live action villain performance as Killmonger in Black Panther is being seriously touted for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination, Brolin is just much more impressive for me.
Thanos is the performance Brolin will be remembered for, and he's done a lot of impressive work.

I haven't seen Infinity War yet, but I easily prefer at least half a dozen comic book movie villain performances to that of Ledger, so I wouldn't be at all shocked to find myself agreeing with you. I will disagree with you on the above though, at least from a personal perspective; as John Brolin will always be Brand Walsh to me.

Brolin is really good but Ledger's performance is GOAT level.

Not really. It seems that Thanos used the reality stone on OP Nah...it"s just that people have been teabagging Ledger"s balls in their mouth for so long, that it may be a slow realisation for some that Brolin"s Thanos has taken the top comic book villain spot . Thanos isnt a ranting and raving nutcase, even though he"s cleary insane. The skill it takes to make insanity seem perfectly rational is beyond. May take awhile for some people to realise just how strong and layered Brolin"s performance is compared to Ledger"s skilled, but very obvious theatrics. I thought it was just me saying/thinking this, but apparently the Thanos> Ledger Joker thing is getting some play on social media. People really love this character and performance.

I didn't like his performance at all. The character and the movie, yes, excellent subversion. Who knew the third Avengers film would essentially be the story of a mad king committing mass genocide, and sitting by a lake with a melancholy smile of satisfaction on his face? But his performance? Ever since his first appearance in... I think it was the first Guardians? I've felt his character was too... Josh Brolin. Too common, too modern day American dude. I figured in the years he had to develop the character he'd get it more where it needed to be, to give him the weight of the ultimate threat to the universe, but nah. You compare him to Vader, he doesn't have Vader's voice, it's a shame Age of Ultron was such a muddled mix of a movie because Spader absolutely fucking slayed that movie. Forget all the zingers they had him reeling off, just from the moment that first teaser came out where he did the Pinocchio line that guy displayed a loftiness, a presence that Brolin completely lacked. Didn't like his vocal performance, didn't like his physical one (Serkis he ain't) there was no grandeur to it at all. Facially was very good, but it wasn't enough for me at all. I've never been on that Ledger train, so I'm not necessarily disagreeing with your central comparison, but to me Brolin was what kept this movie from being straight up amazing. Conversely look what they did with Red Skull . Transformed from ridiculous camp into ghost from ancient folktale (what a fucking sequence that all was). If recasting is what you have to do to make it work then do it! Such tone deafness!

but seriously, I do agree that Brolin was quite good as Thanos (and certainly the best MCU villain in that universe) but the way Ledger TRANSFORMED himself into the Joker was truly one of a kind performance .

Hmm, hard to say. Brolin was superb as Thanos, and I love that the film was essentially all about him, but Ledger really made The Joker his own. I guess I'll have to see what I think about that sort of a question, a few weeks later.

haven't seen the movie yet but I'm going to assume this is flagrantly untrue.

Nah, he was great but Heath Ledger's Joker is part of film history.

So now that I've seen it, I'll put them at about par. They each gave an average villain performance in an average film.

Brolin is very, very good -- it's remarkable that an entirely CGI creation was able to have such gravitas and presence. But do I think he's better than Ledger? No.

Thanos was a great villain in an otherwise mediocre movie, but I still prefer Ledger.

My man said the same exact thing. He swears it's much better than Heath Ledger in the Dark Knight. My favorite super hero villain performance is still Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman though.

Brolin is one of the best working actors around today and his performance in Infinity War was superb, but... ....if you would like to know why you were banned, shoot me a PM.

Yeah, I'm gonna disagree on that. Brolin did a very good job and gave his character more depth than what was on the page, but Ledger's Joker is in a league of its own.

Yeah, I just saw it and he was a good villain as Thanos. Best part of that film (which was tedious for me with the nonstop fighting). I wouldn't go as far as him being better than Ledger though.

He’s real good, but nah. And both as a villain, and a character, I prefer Kilmonger.
